Q: iOS 9 stuck on "slide to upgrade"

Hey all. I have an iPhone 5c that I tried to upgrade to iOS 9. However, like a lot of people it is now stuck on the "slide to upgrade" screen.

I have tried connecting it to my Macbook Air, and clicking "back up now" to both this computer, and iCloud. Neither have been successful: "restore backup" remains greyed, and there is the note "Your iPhone has never been backed up to this computer".

I know the last resort is to "restore factory settings". However, I have a lot of text messages and notes that I don't want to lose forever. Photos are already downloaded to my Mac so that's fine.

More (maybe) relevant information:

  • I bought my Macbook yesterday
  • Previously, I was able to answer whether I wanted my location services off/on - I chose off. It also asked me what wifi I want to be on, after I answered, it crashed.

So. Is there any way I can fix my iPhone so that it works again (I don't care what iOS it's on), and so my messages and notes aren't deleted? Thanks in advance for any help.

Problem seems to be the passcode.

If disabled you can update/restore etc...

Turn it off when you get to that option.

If turned back on at any point the phone locks with the slide to upgrade screen.

Seems to be something with the 5 and iOS7.

Unfortunately I am unable to disable the passcode from my iPhone, it doesn't give me that option. Unless I can do that from my Mac? And yep, I was using iOS 7 before...wish I never upgraded now.

Update: I spoke to Apple Support's online chat. They advised me that I should either restore my phone to it's factory settings, or wait until they release an update to the bugs in iOS 9.

    Hello tofugoddess,

the best is connect your iphone 5C to computer and make a full back up of your 5C. then restore 5C from that back up in recovery mode

. it will trigger the stucking part to pass it over

If you have a passcode a simple restore will not work.

Make sure you have a backup on iTunes or iCloud for a later date because for some reason iCloud backups are looping back to the slide to upgrade screen.

Make sure your device is turned off.

Hold down home button while connecting device to computer and don't let go until you see the red iTunes logo

Message pops up on iTunes "iTunes has discovered a device in recovery mode" Select Restore>Update & Restore

Once its complete IF YOU CHOOSE when it asks

1.)set up as new, 2.) Restore from iCloud backup/ 3.) Restore from iTunes backup ONLY do iTunes backup iCloud backup is not working currently.

If you only have iCloud backups set up as new and make sure your settings>iCloud is signed in and you should atleast be able to get your contacts and photos until a later date.

IF YOU HAVE NO PASSCODE ON YOUR DEVICE YOU CAN SIMPLY BACK UP YOUR DEVICE AFTER CONNECTING TO ITUNES AND RESTORE!!!

I did a full restore to factory setting and then restored the backup.

It didn't work until I turned off the passcode....

The passcode seems to be the issue if you have iOS7 previously installed.

    Hey cumhuryalcin,

I tried to back up my 5C, but it won't allow me to. I have tried putting my phone into recovery mode and re-updating iOS 9 - I doubt it'll work, but worth a shot. Thanks!

This is great but...my iTunes won't let me back my data up. So even if I restore it I won't be able to retrieve my lost data.

i think you can not tap to trust this computer cause of stucking problem. have you authorize your computer and the itunes is up to date?

if your answer is yes. and if there is no other computer to try it sadly you may loose your data in your phone.

Thanks for your help everyone...unfortunately I'm just going to have to restore it to factory settings and lose all my data. I'm really annoyed! Because of a bug on Apple's part (and partly because I didn't back stuff up previously) I've lost all my data. Definitely going to back up from now on.
