At start up I get an icon of a folder with flashing question mark. Have installed a new drive with same results. Can start up with OS install disk but does not show installed drive. I put in a new hard drive but same results. Internal drive is not being seen. What can the problem be?

Is the new drive 1.5 Gb/sec compatible?
Did you do this with the Install Disc?
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
& format the Disk HFS+?
The new drive is compatible, as is the one that shipped with the computer, which was operating fine until, without any warning, when I tried to start up one morning, it failed to start. I kept getting the icon of a folder with a flashing question mark.
Neither one is recognized by Disc Utility. That's my problem. It's not with the drives but with the computer somewhere. Yes, I did this with the OS X install disc. Because the discs are not being recognized I am unable to go any further. I've even tried my TechTools Pro disc and it can't recognize any internal drives.
Can you tell if they are spinning up at at all?
No, I can't tell. They are quiet running drives.
Do you have another Mac with Firewire?
Yes, I have a MacMini running OS 10.6.8
Long shot, but connect the two with a Firewire cable, boot G5 holding t key, see ikf the G5 Drive shows up in DU on the Mini.
No, it didn't work. Think I'll hunt around for a kit to convert an internal drive to an external and hook it up to the Mini to try and salvage the data.
