iPhone 5 stuck in recovery mode

i was on safari just browsing when the whole screen when green and pixelated and then it just turned off and said to plug it into iTunes. i did and iTunes immediately said there was a problem and it needs to be restored. i told it to restore and it started but after like 30 seconds it said and unknown error occurred (40) and it can’t connect to the device. the error occurs when its verifying the restore with apple. at this stage my phone was stuck on an apple symbol with an empty progress bar. when i unplug my phone from my laptop it stays on that screen for a bit then goes back to the plug into iTunes screen and the whole process starts again. I’ve tried restoring it 4/5 times and i dunno what to do next.

I've already tried restarting iTunes, my laptop (macbook pro retina display) and I've checked that all of my software is up to date. Any suggestions?

My phone did something like this a few weeks ago where it would turn on and got stuck on the apple screen but i was able to put it into recovery mode and it was fine. i updated to ios 9 last week with no issues.

It's likely there is a hardware fault.

Your device or computer might have a hardware issue that stops the update or restore from completing.

  1. Check that your security software and settings aren't blocking your device from communicating with the Apple update server.
  2. Then try to restore your iOS device two more times while connected with a cable, computer, and network you know are good.
  3. Make sure that your security software and settings are allowing communication between your device and update servers.
  4. If you still see the error message when you update or restore, contact Apple support.

If you still see the error message, check for outdated or modified software.
