Q: ios9 update -> now touchscreen problems

Ever since I updated to ios 9, my iphone 5s touchscreen is acting crazy.  The accuracy of where I touch or slide vs. what the iphone thinks I did is completely off.  The phone seems to have a mind of its own too, it starts opening apps and stuff when I'm not even touching it.  Then other times it freezes completely for 5-10 minutes.  It is nearly impossible to shut it off because it won't swipe when I initiate the turn off screen.  The home button works fine.  Every once in a while the phone will act normal for like 15 minutes and then it goes crazy again!!  Anyone else??  This just started a couple days ago after I did the ios 9 update.

To clarify, I was out of warranty and I did not pay anything until the following day when I went back to purchase the 6s+

    Hi JwEaFgFnr,

I have a 6+, iOS 9.0.2 (upgrading my iOS CAUSED this problem, 9.1 doesn't seem to FIX the problem, so I see no reason to risk things getting worse with 9.1).  NO screen protector.  I did use a case, but have stopped using it because it felt like it made things worse, but the intermittent nature of this problem makes it extremely difficult to associate root causes.  It FEELS like the touchscreen is "seeing" incorrect touches.  I also went to Settings: General: Accessibility: Touch Accomodations: Hold Duration, turned it on, set to .35 seconds.  (I'm still not entirely clear whether this is active, since I haven't enabled Touch Accomodations, but it feels like it helps.)

    Here are my symptoms:

+ Touchscreen does not respond at all to my inputs.  This happens perhaps several times a week at this point for me.  Generally, if I leave the phone alone, it returns to normal after a few minutes.

+ Sometimes, touchscreen does not respond to my inputs AND it accepts phantom touches/input.  If a keyboard is loaded at that time, it types by itself.  This sounds like it matches what other people have reported with strange lines being drawn.  I _believe_ that this has happened much less after I set up the hold duration.

+ Vertical lines on the right side of my screen, a little like pinstripes, but of varying width, intermittently.  Hard to see, especially when I have photos as wallpaper - easier to see if your wallpaper is set to a black image.  It feels like there are ALWAYS lines displayed when the phone is misbehaving, but I do see lines sometimes when it ISN'T misbehaving.  No lines right now.

+ I've had phone calls dropped during these problems.  I've also had phone calls I could not answer - you need to swipe to answer.  I've theorized that a headset might be a workaround in such cases, since I can answer by pressing a button instead of swiping.

I _used_ to do a hard reset to fix the problem, but I'm simply leaving the phone alone now, and it recovers.

These problems started after I upgraded to 9.0.  I had absolutely no issues with iOS 8.x regarding the touchscreen.  I have been using iPhones since the 3GS, and have not experienced problems at this level before.

I've definitely learned a lesson, to not upgrade to a new iOS unless a) there's specific functionality I really want/need, b) it's been around long enough to really be stable (though it's not clear to me I would learn about this specific problem without actually encountering it, it doesn't seem very well publicized), and c) I'm ready to have ongoing issues without getting too upset.

By the way, I did go to the Genius Bar, and they said absolutely nothing was wrong with my phone.  There's no Genius Bar where I live, so I can't easily go for another appointment - I was visiting Seattle recently when I stopped by - but I would definitely be willing for them to try to replace my phone completely, if we thought that would help.  It's clear to me that resetting it does NOT help, since so many other people have tried that and it didn't work.  And it SOUNDS like someone with a 6s is also experiencing this!  I thought it would be limited to older phones.

Hope some of this helps identify common symptoms and possible solutions!

I updated to iOS 9 like all of you and had this issue.

you would be very surprised to hear that it is hardware related, which .... Doesn't make any sense.

How can a software update screw up the screen? I don't know but that's what the Genius Bar had to do to make it work.

Replacing the software didn't work, we had to replace the screen.

    good luck guys

I'm a software developer, and software update can screw up the screen.

I have the same Problem with my IPhone 6S (64 GB). I have noticed, that after the Screen works again, the keyboard text suggesions don't work anymore. To get this to work again I first have to turn the suggesions of and on again.

Guys I have some update for you, may be this will help you..

I have iPhone 5s 16 GB (Out Of Warranty) and had the same problem. I visited Apple Service Centre but they said just reset/restore it but no improvemnt, I have gone through Apple Chat but they said if reset/restore did not help you then it might be hardware issue.

I know there is no hardware issue as there are ample no. of user who are having the same issue after updating their device to iOS9. Trust me Apple is not accepting that fact that it caused by iOS9.

There is no way for me except change my device, but just before that I have mailed Mr. Cook about this and include my frustration in that mail. On the very next day I got a call from Apple to check what is the issue, I have described them all the things and then they asked me to do some changes in settings, they took System Logs for my device etc. but nothing helped me.

Just because I escalated this issue to Mr. Cook, they are very helping and they said we are not able to find out the root cause, so we need your device in our lab for further testing and they will give me an replacement (a brand new iPhone 5s, even after my phone was out of warranty). I will get my new iPhone 5s tomorrow.

So just advice all of you that if you phone is in warranty then ask for an replacement and if its out of warranty then mark a mail to Mr. Cook and may be you will be lucky as me to get a replacement.

    Thanks,

    Mohit

13 pages of complaints. I just went to an Apple Store, but because my device was out of warranty, the only thing they could do for me was offer me a new device. They said that because my device was two years old, the hardware must have failed, and the new update simply was too much on the device. Even though my device worked perfectly wt 9.0. I had to buy a new device at $160. It was discounted some, but still wasn't cheap. As much as I want my device to work properly, I still updated to the latest update.  I really believe that what apple told me was BS, and I'm really expecting touch to fail on this device as well. So far, although it works, it still acts a little bit wonky. Slower touch reaction time, then before, the update on the old device. This was the way my old device used to work, before touch failed almost completely. Since the device had the old IOS installed on it before I updated, it worked great in the store. You probably think I'm crazy for updating the device again, but I wanted this to happen. Since I have a 90 day warranty, I'll be returning to the apple store, in a few weeks, once the touch function completely fails again. I'll be demanding my money back, and be telling them that Im never purchasing an apple product again. "Extremely" ****** off.
