Apps stuck on "waiting" but also not available in the store anymore.

I recently restored my emergency iPhone 5 from a backup after my 5S was destroyed. Most of the apps installed but a number of them are stuck in the dreaded gray purgatory of "waiting." Quite a few I was able to install just by deleting then downloading fresh form the store. However I have a few older apps that I enjoy which are no longer available. I went out on a limb and deleted one, hoping I could pull it from my iTunes, but it seems to be gone forever.

Any clue as to why this is happening or anything I can do to save these old apps?

When apps are no longer available from the App Store, they may not be redownloaded. See this article for reference - Download past purchases from iTunes.

Specifically -

See if the content is available for redownload. Previously purchased items might not be available if they're no longer on the iTunes Store.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Sincerely.
