i cant import my photos keep giving me iphone is unreachable

I am trying to import my photos but it keeps giving me "iPhone is unreachable" error and not uploading any of my photos. I have tried the photo importer as well as just copy and past method. it won't even let me open up the photo and view them. Can anyone tell me how to fix and or make this work?
