Q: Location Services not working for Ethernet attached Yosemite Desktop

I am unable to edit the Weather app in my Yosemite Dashboard.  It defaults to Cupertino and I cannot change to my location.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Location Services (including automatic time zone selection, Maps, and "Find My Mac") relies on a database of Wi-Fi access points with known locations. You don't have to be connected to a wireless network, but Wi-Fi must be turned on and within range of one of those access points. Otherwise the machine won't be located at all, or the location will be wrong.

I turned on Wi Fi as you suggested.  The Weather app still shows Cupertino and the time showed Atlanta instead of New York.  So turning Wi Fi on did not solve my problem.  Thank you for your suggestion.

Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on. Open the Date & Time pane in System Preferences and select the Time Zone tab. If the settings are locked, click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and enter your password when prompted. Then check the box marked

Set time zone automatically using current location

if it's not already checked. Within a few seconds, a red pin should drop onto the map at your location. Does that happen?

I tried what you said but am further trouble shooting with my system administrator, will get back to you.  We are testing Mavericks OS to see if same symptoms exist.  Thank  you for your help.

I worked with my tech support and was able to get to the Weather app from the "Notifications" bars to the right of the Magnifying glass on upper right of screen.  Then I was able to modify the location of weather from the dropdown; however, the weather app that gets added from "DASHBOARD" still points to Cupertino, so must be a bug in Yosemite.  Notice that DASHBOARD brings in Yahoo app and not an Apple weather app.  The address CANNOT be edited.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    ~/Library/Preferences/widget-com.apple.widget.weather.plist

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

Services Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)

from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. Log out or restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

Are you working inside of a corporation with a corporate firewall that requires you to use a Proxy Server for all your web browsing?

If that is the case, then the outside world sees you as coming from the company's Proxy Server gateway to the internet.

I work in New England for a company headquartered in California.  As a result most location web services that care about location assume the IP address they are seeing is where I am located, so I frequently come up in Google Maps as being in California.

Based on other posts in the forum, it seems to be a Yahoo server problem.
