iOS9 update frozen at swipe to upgrade

Overnight some magic downloaded iOS 9 onto my 'too full for upgrade' iPhone 5S and gave me the option to do it on device. I wondered how it'd gained 650 MB space overnight, but unquestioningly hit upgrade. After the prescribed time the upgrade completed and the phone rebooted to the Hello screen. I unlocked it and it said upgrade completed, just need to setup a few things. It presented the Enable Location Services option, so I did that, then it went to Select a WiFi network - which I did-- it then froze (as in I couldn't swipe) at a swipe to upgrade screen. The only solution seemed to be a restart, so I did, and it had a quick progress bar and then repeated the same Hello screen etc and froze again.

I tried leaving it for a while and other things, e..g iTunes shows it as an iOS 9 phone, and 'thinks' it is accessible. I could restore the phone (but my backup is at home)

Any other tips? Sorry if this is the wrong place to ask.

Several Possible Solutions for Slide to Upgrade Problem

Here is Apple’s suggested fix: If the Slide to Upgrade screen won't go away after you update to iOS 9 - Apple Support.

Here's another person's suggestion: How to backup photos from bricked iPhone (slide to upgrade) after upgrading to iOS 9.

Here are two YouTube video suggestions you can try:

If you have no success with the above then sign into your iCloud.com page, click on the Find My Phone icon. Click the Devices button, click on your device’s item, then remove if from the list if it is inactive. If your device is active when you click on it, then click on the Erase icon on the bottom right of your device’s displayed window. You should then try this:

Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:

Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.

1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the

other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.

2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds

until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.

* If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the

Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,

release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.

3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the

device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,

let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some

charge, and then start with step 2 again.

4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.

When this screen appears you can release the Home button:

5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:

6. Use iTunes to restore the device as New.

If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.

Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device. All user content on the device will be erased, but if you had previously synced with iTunes on this computer, you can restore from a previous backup. See this article for more information.
