Ping iPhone not working with WatchOS2

Hello. Since updating to WatchOS2, the "Ping iPhone" feature is not working from the watch's settings glance. When I hit the ping button, it says "Pinging iPhone" but no sound ever plays on the phone, regardless of how many times I hit it.

Every now and again, it will work as you would expect: Every time you hit the button, a sound plays on the phone, but for the most part the feature does not work.

If I reboot either the phone, or the watch, the feature will work for a while, then eventually stop again.

Is anyone else experiencing the same issue?

The Watch is paired with an iPhone 6+, with iOS 9 on it.

Hi

The following steps may help (check after each):

If you have not yet done so, update your iPhone and Apple Watch to the latest software, starting with your iPhone:

Check that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are both enabled on your iPhone and that your devices are connected, with neither device in Airplane Mode:

Restart (normally) both your iPhone and your Apple Watch, turning both off together, then restarting your iPhone first:

Unpair and re-pair your watch:

Resetting the network settings did not help me. It eventually stopped pinging.

I have tried hard resetting the iPhone as well since the issue appeared (hold sleep and home button until it reboots), but this did not help either in the long run. Immediately after resetting either the watch or the phone, it will ping for a little while then eventually stop.

Are there any other suggestions for this issue?

Try unpairing and re-pairing your Apple Watch and iPhone.

The Apple Watch app on your iPhone takes backups of your watch automatically, including a fresh backup when unpairing via the app. If you have Activation Lock enabled, you will need your Apple ID and password to hand.

When setting it up again after unpairing, choose to restore your Apple Watch from backup when offered the option (by the Apple Watch app). Most data and settings will be restored, except for: calibration data, synced playlists, cards used for Apple Pay on your watch, watch passcode.

I have tried this and it does not work. The issue started right after iOS9 update on iPhone 5s. Now watch is at watchOS2 and still no joy. All your solution did was force me to re-enter all my wi-fi passwords. Also, re-pairing doesn't work. Please stop giving out bogus information if you don't really know the answer.

These troubleshooting steps are appropriate when seeking to resolve potential connectivity issues (whether with new or established software).

The first suggestion was based on a confirmed answer to the same issue under the previous version of watchOS. It therefore seemed reasonable to suggest it. When doing so, I advised that password re-entry would be required. Subsequent posts advised that the process was proving unsuccessful under watchOS2.

Unpairing and re-pairing can also resolve connectivity-related issues, although again this does not appear to resolve the pinging issue.

I am sorry if you feel that neither suggestion should have been offered. You may prefer to contact Apple Support:

Thank you for the suggestions Jonathan. Unfortunately, I still have the issue after resetting the network settings, hard resetting the phone, rebooting the watch,un-paring, and re-paring the watch, etc.

I will probably call Apple about this, and I am sure they will tell me to restore my phone which is a PITA, but I'll see what they say. If they say anything interesting, I will reply here. At least I know I am not the only one having this issue.

Jonathan, the problem is that you are presenting these things as solutions, not troubleshooting steps. If you're going to offer them here, please specify that all you're doing is following a tech support script that is not specific to this problem and that you don't know what the solution is, but that this is something to try.

The context for the first suggestion has already been explained. The second suggestion began with "Try..."

You're welcome, Hellbus2.

If you do come to reset and restore your iPhone, make sure to back up your iPhone either via iCloud (encrypted as standard) or, if via iTunes, selecting the option to "Encrypt iPhone backup".

Encrypted backups include sensitive data (including Health data, saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings and website history) that will otherwise be lost when restoring from the backup.
