How do I upgrade an iMac9,1 from OS X 10.5.8 to Yosemite?

What is the process for upgrading an iMac9,1 from OS X 10.5.8 to Yosemite? I believe I need to purchase a Snow Leopard disk from Apple, then I can upgrade to Yosemite for free - is that correct?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), iMac9,1

Back up your data, click here, and read the entire page. Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC software such as Microsoft Office 2004; some other installed software may also be incompatible.

Yes that is correct you must have a minimum of 10.6.8 to upgrade to Yosemite. After you get the update to 10.6.8 be sure you check and make sure you update that software from the App's Store then you can up grade to Yosemite.
