Q: iOS 9 broke my iPhone 5!

I tried upgrading to iOS 9 today from iOS 7, and my iPhone 5 keeps getting stuck on the "slide to upgrade." The touch screen becomes unresponsive.

When I force-reboot it by holding the home and power buttons, this allows me to slide on that screen. I type my passcode, then it says "update completed." I hit "continue" to bring me to the "Choose a wifi network" screen. When I try to select a wifi network or skip it by hitting "next," the phone glitches out and brings me back to the "slide to upgrade" screen, and the touch screen is once again unresponsive. I have repeated this several times with no luck.

Is there some way to wipe iOS 9 from it without actual access to the phone? I tried plugging it into my computer, but I can get no access because the "trust computer" screen doesn't show up.

I have been stuck on this same problem now for over 12 hours now. I called Apple Support earlier today and spent an hour on the phone with them which gave me some pointers but it didn't fix it. I finally got the phone to boot up and get past that screen by doing a Restore iPhone from iTunes, however doing that wipes out the phone and you lose all of your data. Since I was able to do that I have repeated that Restore Process 4 different times, and then tried to restore my data from backup via iTunes and from also tried restoring from my iPhone menu with no luck.

I tried restoring data from a local backup saved on my Computer, and also from 2 different dated backups in iCloud. Every time after I do the restore, the phone reboots and I am right back at that "slide to upgrade" screen.

So yes I can to my iPhone 5 to iOS 9, but I have lost all of my data in the process and I can't even restore the data that I do have a backup of.

    Thanks Apple, great upgrade.

iTunes won't even let me restore the iPhone to factory settings because I left "find my iPhone" on. It tells me to turn that off in order to proceed. PROBLEM IS that I can't get past the damned wifi select screen.

I should've known better than to get the new iOS, it always *****.

I had the same problem. I had to log into my iCloud account and turn off and remove my iPhone from there so it would turn off the Find my iphone message in iTunes. The thing is it didn't happen right away, I turned it off via iCloud, but it took several hours before iTunes would let me restore (set back to factory defaults) as it would keep giving me that Find my iPhone message.

I still cannot restore my data from either local iTunes backup or from the Cloud backup without it rebooting the phone after the restore, then sending me right back to being stuck on that slide to upgrade screen.

A never ending cycle, restore to factory from iTiunes, restore my backup data, get stuck again on slide to upgrade. Someone at Apple needs to lose their job over this one. I am seeing too many people have this problem for it to be an isolated incident.

So there's no fix that you or anyone knows of ?

I agree though, this is a load of barnacles. The update has been out nearly a week you'd think somebody would be on top of this.

You need to put the phone into recovery mode then.

To put your phone into recovery mode, I will have you disconnect your phone, close iTunes on your computer, and hold the power button down on your phone until it powers off.

After that, you are going to hold the home button down while reconnecting your phone with the cable. Continue holding the home button down until you see connect to iTunes on the phone screen.

After a few moments, you will see an iTunes screen open on your computer that will give an option to restore.

I can't do that. When I plug the phone into my computer, the iTunes window says I have to type my passcode on the phone. To do that, I have to slide to unlock, wait for it to update or whatever, then slide past the "Hello" screen and type my passcode a second time. I did that all while holding the home button. No restore/recovery mode or anything showed up, it was just like normal (broken)

You can follow the steps outlined in If the Slide to Upgrade screen won't go away after you update to iOS 9 - Apple Support

There will be a fix to this issue available in the next update within the coming weeks.

Great, so I can either use my phone with none of my restored data for a few weeks while apple comes out with a patch for this, or just leave it as a brick.

I have a passcode on my phone and sometimes it would ask for it in iTunes other times it would not, Seems to be a timing thing. If you do this it might help.

Have your phone disconnected from your PC

    Open iTunes

Reboot your iPhone and hold down the Home button (bottom front of phone just above where you lightning jack plugs in). Do not let up on that button, just keeping holding it down

Once it powers up, plug your USB cable into your computer.

iTunes should pop up an error box saying you need to either update or restore you iPhone because there is a problem with it. You will also see a display on your iPhone of a lightning cable pointing to the iTunes logo when this happens.

At that point select restore, but it will wipe your phone and make you start over like it is a brand new phone.

Now here is the beyond frustrating part. Once you get your phone back up and running if you try and do a data restore either directly from the iPhone or from the iTunes interface, once it completes the restore and reboots your phone, you go through a few screens and then end up locked again on that slide to upgrade screen. I have tried restoring from 3 iCloud backup, and 1 local PC backup and no luck what so ever.

Sorry for the run on sentences and bad grammar, but I am beyond frustrated at this point. I never had a Windows upgrade go this bad, just saying,

I "fixed" my phone by putting it in "DFU" mode (google how to do it) and then restored it to factory settings. Lo and behold, my phone is now working with iOS 9.

BUT MY ******* ICLOUD BACKUP WASNT THERE WHEN I FINALLY SET THE DAMNED TIHNG UP. ALL MY DATA AND TWO YEARS OF PHOTOS ARE NOW ******* GONE THANK YOU VERY MUCH APPLE FOR YOUR AMAZING PRODUCTS. SWITCHING TO ANDROID NEXT UPGRADE I GET THANKS FOR NOTHING, APPLE SCUMBAGS

sorry, I wasn't angry at you guys. I'm just ****** at apple's clearly unreliable cloud storage. there is no reason that my icloud backup should have disappeared. I made it yesterday before I upgraded to ios 9. I apologize for any misunderstanding.
