Location Services (including automatic time zone selection, Maps, and "Find My Mac") relies on a database of Wi-Fi access points with known locations. You don't have to be connected to a wireless network, but Wi-Fi must be turned on and within range of one of those access points. Otherwise the machine won't be located at all, or the location will be wrong. Sometimes the location will be wrong because the database contains inaccurate data. That would happen, for example, if you moved from one place to another and took your Wi-Fi router with you. The router is still listed in the database, but the location is wrong.

According to reports, if you connect to a Wi-Fi network with an iPhone, the location of the network will be sent to Apple and added to the database after a delay. An iPhone, unlike other Apple devices, has built-in GPS satellite navigation, and so can locate itself independently of Wi-Fi. The phone would have to be set to share diagnostic and usage information with Apple.

"You don't have to be connected to a wireless network, but Wi-Fi must be turned on and within range of one of those access points."

What do you exactly mean by that statement?

And one more thing I wanted to share with you is my mac and my iPad both showing wrong location, and same location...that is the location of my previous place where I used the same router....And I tried reseting my router also, but is of no use...And is there anyway to remove inaccurate locations from the database...

Plz help me in solving the problem in both my iPad and mac..

My iPhone is showing proper correct location....

If the statement is unclear, you would have to specify what you don't understand. Otherwise I have no idea how to respond.

My iPhone is showing proper correct location.

That's because it has GPS and the other devices don't.

    Sorry sir.....Plz don't mistake me...

My doubt is, as you said,I did not connect to any wifi network...wifi is turned on,and you mentioned within the range of one of those access points. I don't know what is the meaning of access points, please guide me to fix the problem....

An access point is a Wi-Fi radio station, such as a router. Take one of the devices somewhere else, where it can see other networks. See whether location works then.

As per your advice, I took both my mac and iPad from my place to city, and visited the apple service centre...when connected to their WIFI network, both the devices started showing correct locations, including weather. Google maps,Apple maps,Find my iPad showed exact location. Technician told me to cross check by creating hotspot from my iPhone and I noted both devices showing correct location. Then he said no problem with devices. Then I went to other electronic store, and asked the salesperson to share his wifi from mobile and verified that location services were working fine. Then I came to the conclusion, that my router is having problem,so I bought new router.

I came to my home town, configured the new router. Now this time location services not working.Find my iPad or Mac,showing location not available. Even Google maps displaying location not available. I tried with my old router,as usual it showed the previous location where I took the router with me before two months.

Then again I created hotspot from my iPhone and checked, location not available. But with the same phone when I created hotspot in apple service centre,it showed the correct location. Again with sony mobile,I created hotspot, location not available.

My doubt is find my iPad or Mac,whether it will work only in major cities?

But google maps which works universally, displayed location not available.

Now I am in confusion whether "my device is having problem" or "my router is having problem(there is less chance,as it is a new one.)" or my ISP could not provide location services(this also less chance,as I cross checked with my cellular network with hotspot)

Please help me on solving this issue...

The best answer I have in my first comment. "Find My Mac" doesn't work everywhere. Nothing is wrong with the devices, and the problem has nothing to do with your router or your ISP.
