The phone has now got to a screen that sys "slide to update" with a swipe arrow left to right. It does nothing. I've turned it off and on now (by pressing the two main buttons together and holding them), but I still end up with the same, un-swipeable, swipe request.

Sep 22, 2015 5:17 AM in response to Ingo2711by peterfromdroitwichspa,Thankyou for this. However, no matter which route I take I can't get my iTunes to come up with the phone icon to be able to reset it. The computer asks for me to confirm contact with the phone, which I can't do because the phone is stuck on the swipe screen. I've managed to force it off and on a couple of times but with no change in response.
Has anyone had the same difficulties?

No matter how loud you are trying to shout by using caps in your post, Apple will not hear you, this is a user to user forum.
Tell Apple by using the feedback link:
And, if you happen to read the article, there will soon be an update to fix this issue.

Sep 22, 2015 8:24 AM in response to peterfromdroitwichspaby peterfromdroitwichspa,Thankyou all for your advice. I did manage to get through to Apple in the end and spent over an hour on the land line to them. In the end, my iPhone has had to be reset to factory default settings. It is all backed up (I hope). They say that in a few days they will have resolved the issue and that I will only then be able to restore all my settings and data.
Another issue with the new iOS9 was that not only did my phone lock shut (as swipe did not work) but it could not be accesses or updated through iCloud whilst Find my iPhone was turned on on the phone itself! And that could not be turned off because the phone was locked internally!
Apple could not have done a better job of hacking and bugging their own customers, hardware and software if they had been professional hackers.
