Sudden Rebooting and Panic Reports

Hi guys,

This is my first post.

I have the MacBook Pro 6,2 - The first 15" shipped with the i7 from about April 2010. I got the top end model and I'm the only user having had this machine from new.

At the end of last year/beginning of this year, my MBP has been suddenly restarting randomly.

Some nights it would do it 3 or 4 times before I got annoyed and gave up using it. I used to work for a Premium Apple Reseller and often worked on fixing and problem solving machines. We had access to the Apple Hardware Test's and other various software to test the machine. This has passed all tests fine and I even ran the AHT ( Pressing D from booting), and again this has passed the tests.

I'd notice previously that it would reset if I were using multiple displays or running software like Photoshop. I've since noticed that I can't put my screens into full-screen mode as this tends to reset within minutes of this happening. I'm thinking that it may be graphics related, but I'm no expert. Below I have posted the most recent panic report which was roughly 5 minutes before posting here.

Originally I thought it may be that the HDD was failing as the original HDD is still installed. I've formatted it back to factory, which seemed to help temporarily. I've since bought an external HDD and now boot from that, but the problem persists.

I read somewhere that apparently this model shipped with a Graphics card error, but due to the OS that it shipped with, this was not an issue at the time. I'm not sure how accurate this is, as you can find a "problem" for and with anything if you look hard enough.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

You have the MacBookPro6,2—the Edsel of Macs. It may have the logic-board defect that was covered by a recall program that has now ended.

Residents of the EU may be entitled to warranty service for up to six years after purchase.

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider, to have the machine tested. The routine hardware diagnostics used by service providers do not detect the fault. There is a specific test for this issue that Apple calls "VST" (for "Video Switching Test.") Ask for it. A "Failed" result means that the fault is present.

You may be quoted a price of about $350 (in the U.S.) for a "depot repair," which involves shipping the unit to a central repair facility and takes about two weeks. For that flat fee, anything found wrong with it should be fixed, not just the logic board.

Sometimes the replacement part is also defective, so be prepared for that possibility. If you decide to pay for a new logic board, test thoroughly during the 90-day warranty period on the repair. Some owners have reported that they went through as many as three replacement boards before getting one that worked.

If you don't want to pay for the repair, you may (or may not) be able to work around the problem by disabling automatic graphics switching. To use the discrete graphics processor, you'll need a third-party utility to switch to it manually.

Often the problems start after an OS upgrade. If the upgrade was recent, and you have backups, then you can revert to a previous OS X version.

Thanks for the reply Linc.

Sounds like you've just described what I had previously heard. Luckily being in the EU, I should be able to get it sorted under EU Law, I just now need to find my proof of purchase.

I'm aware that the replacement part may also be faulty. I'll definitely go for a VST. I'm not sure that we had that test at our store? We did have a video test, but I think it was more to do with the actual screen.

I have tried a 3rd party graphics switching tool, but that didn't seem to make much difference.

Thanks again!
