Q: What is considered best practice to deploy Mac Apps to multiple mac computers?

Can Apple Configurator be used to deploy Mac Apps as well as iPad Apps or do we need to set up a Mac server and used Apple Profiler or another third party MDM?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8)

You can use either one, but Apple Configurator only works over a USB connection—not practical if you have many devices.
