Q: iPhone 5 Restoring data from backup after iOS 9 locks phone back up, how do you get your data back?

I went through the locked up on slide to upgrade problem on my iPhone 5. Now that I have done a restore and have a clean phone it seems to be running iOS 9 ok now. Now that I have the phone working again, I want to restore my data from a backup. I have 1 backup on my local PC, and 3 backups in iCloud. I have tried restoring from all 4 for them multiple times. Each time it says the restore is finished, it reboots my phone, then when it comes back up, I end up stuck at that slide to upgrade screen and end up having to do the restore (wipe your phone again) option in iTunes to get out of that screen.

I even tried going into iTunes after doing one of the data restores, and when it gives you the option to Restore (wipe it out) or Update it. I tried the Update option, but then after it ran the update and rebooted my phone, I was still stuck at the slide to upgrade screen.

Why is just restoring data that was on the phone before causing iOS 9 to lock it up? Is there any way through iTunes I could at least do a partial restore and just get my contacts back?

    Greetings RinFL,

Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you are running iOS 9 and want to restore a backup, but when you do you are stuck at sold to upgrade. It looks like you have already done some troubleshooting. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.

You’ll need to update to iOS 9.0.1:

    1. Connect your iOS device to a computer. Then make sure that iTunes is open.
    2. While your device is connected, press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until you see the Connect to iTunes screen.
    3. When asked, choose Update.
    4. Once the restore is done, finish the onscreen steps to set up your device.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care

Thank you, that did the trick. Once I upgraded to the 9.0.1 rev I was able to restore my phone data from one of my iCloud backups.

What about if you are stuck in the middle of the upgrade, cycling through the finishes of the update until the screen is frozen and "slide to upgrade" is non-responsive.  I have reset, I have connected to a computer running iTunes, but the fix posted in this article does not work.  Any ideas?
