- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

If you have no success with the above then sign into your iCloud.com page, click on the Find My Phone icon. Click the Devices button, click on your device’s item, then remove if from the list if it is inactive. If your device is active when you click on it, then click on the Erase icon on the bottom right of your device’s displayed window. You should then try this:
Placing your device into recovery (DFU-Device Firmware Upgrade) mode:
Follow these steps to place your iOS device into recovery mode. If your iOS device is already in recovery mode, you can proceed immediately to step 6.
1. Disconnect the USB cable from the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, but leave the
other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds
until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
* If you cannot turn off the device using the slider, press and hold the
Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. When the device turns off,
release the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons.
3. While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the
device. The device should turn on. Note: If you see the battery charge warning,
let the device charge for at least ten minutes to ensure that the battery has some
charge, and then start with step 2 again.
4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen.
When this screen appears you can release the Home button:
5. If necessary, open iTunes. You should see the following "recovery mode" alert:
6. Use iTunes to restore the device as New.
If you don't see the "Connect to iTunes" screen, try these steps again. If you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen but the device does not appear in iTunes, see this article and its related links.
Note: When using recovery mode, you can only restore the device as New.

Sep 23, 2015 3:45 PM in response to Lisakavsby tfr58,I had the same problem with iPod5 upgrading from ios7 to ios9. And foolishly had only an outdated backup saved in iTunes. When connected to iTunes I could see content on the iPod but could neither restore from the old backup nor do a new backup. Tried to do a new backup but it hung forever.
Here's what worked for me. It makes a bit of sense after having read a few people say that reloading the ios9 upgrade might help:
- I updated iTunes on my computer to latest version 12.3.0.44
- Put the iPod into Recovery Mode and connect to iTunes. Well documented on this thread and other places how to do this.
- When the Recovery screen came up in iTunes it has the options to Update or Restore. I read the fine print and chose Update which suggested it would save content. Restore wipes to new. Choosing Update downloaded ios9 to iTunes and then reloaded it to the iPod.
- The upgrade went normally this time. All content is still there. I immediately made a new backup in iTunes.
- I noted when trying different things that there's a point where iTunes will say it can't connect to the iPod without entering the passcode. Even when the iPod was hosed, if I reset it with both buttons held down it would successfully get to the point of entering the passcode, enabling iTunes to connect.
Good luck!
