Q: How is activation lock enabled Watch OS2

Apple indicates it should be possible to lock reactivation of the watch - perhaps helping to reduce the risk of theft. I have gone through the watch app on the iPhone and don't see where that setting is located. The images on the Apple web site suggest it should be the phone app that does the locking. I also looked in the settings app on the watch and found nothing.

I have iOS 9 and watch OS 2 and both the watch and phone are protected with security codes.

I must be overlooking a menu choice somewhere and would be grateful for guidance.

To activate it use "Mark as Missing":

Mark Apple Watch as Missing. Open the Apple Watch app on iPhone, tap My Watch, tap Apple Watch, then tap Mark as Missing.Your information and payment cards are safe and no one else can activate your Apple Watch.

Unpair Apple Watch and remove Activation Lock. Open the Apple Watch app on iPhone, tap My Watch, tap Apple Watch, then tap Unpair Apple Watch. Apple Watch is erased, removed from your iCloud account, and Activation Lock is removed.

From what I understand, as long as you have your apple ID set up on your watch, activation lock is automatically enabled on it.  So this means then that should it be lost or stolen you can follow the instructions given in the previous reply in order to protect the watch from being used by another person.

You're right, directly after the update my watch told me, that the lock is now active:

My watch isn't missing. Apple's announcement re new features includes a highlighted panel on using reactivation lock and shows an iPhone screen that enable that. I may have missed the notification when I upgraded watch OS, but the screen show on Apple's website isn't as simple to find as the find my iPhone with the ability to wipe the iPhone.

Part of my complaint is that Apple released the new version of watch OS without documentation. While I don't love reading manuals I think it is great when they are available. The last version of the Apple watch manual listed on Apple's website is from June.

Activation lock on your watch is always enabled, if you are using "Find myPhone" for the paired iPhone.

So you only have to do something about it, when your watch is lost or stolen. There is no separate "enable activation lock" in the Watch app, only the "missing" mode, if you need to lock the device remotely.

Have you cleared your Browser caches? The manual at this link has been updated for Watch OS2. https://help.apple.com/watch/#/apd6ce85daf4

You can tell from the new watch faces that are shown.

    Thanks.

The support article clarifies things, although it still doesn't explain the screen shown on the Watch OS 2 announcement on Apple's web site. I was worried that somehow the upgrade hadn't gone correctly.

    Happy now.

Thanks for the link to the Watch OS manual. I was actually looking for a downloadable manual I could keep on iBooks for reference when I'n not on line. Certainly there is a lot of information at the site you reference.

There is supposed to be a downloadable manual in the iBooks store:

View the user guide in iBooks. Open iBooks, then search for “Apple Watch user guide” in the iBooks Store.

But aus usually I can only find the older German translation in the German iBooks store from April. It would help, if a friendly person would post the direct download link for the Apple Watch Guide at the US iBooks Store or UK iBooks Store. The iBooks Store in the country we are in, will not search the stores in other countries.

Thanks a lot, sberman !  My SAfari is too smart. It os opening the German iBooks Store from this link, with the same error message.

I sent feedback to Apple and asked to add an updated English version of the User Guide  to the German iBooks store.

    That is what I wanted.
