Does that mean you are connecting the iPod to the car via a connection to the iPod's headphone jack?

What happens when you try?

Try:

- Contacts the car system developer/go to their support site

- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost

Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

- Reset the care system

- Reset all settings

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.

All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.

- Restore from backup. See:

Restore your device from an iCloud or iTunes backup - Apple Support

- Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

Sometimes and iOS update breaks compatibility between the device and car system. In that case you have to wait for ether a firmware update to the car system or iOS update

Same thing happened to me after iOS 9 update when attempting to connect to my truck over usb. My truck is a 2015 Tundra.
