Q: Screen stays dark when alarm goes off in the morning

When I use my iPhone 5 with iOS 9 as my alarm clock to wake me up (iOS clock app), the alarm sounds, but the screen does not light up. This means I have to fumble around in the dark to turn off my alarm. I have found that if I set a different alarm (a minute or two after the original alarm sounds, or an alarm during the day) the screen lights. A new alarm at a different time, if it is the alarm that wakes me, does the same thing where the alarm sounds and the screen stays black.

Is there some deep-sleep function that automatically turns on?

By the way, I have Do Not Disturb on at night, and is still on when the alarm goes off.

Does anyone else have any issues like this with iOS 9? It never did this on previous versions of iOS.

I have same problem but the strange thing is that it only occurs when the phone has been idle for several hours i.e. first thing in morning when I most need alarm clock to light up. If I test the alarm any other time such as setting 1 minute ahead of current time it will light up always. It does not matter if cord is plugged in or not. I have tried to contact Apple care support but they have no answers. Hopefully either firmware or software update could resolve this aggravation. I am glad to hear that I am not only one with this problem.

This is the exact issue I have. My phone remains face up and if its idle for a few hours, it will not light up. If I set my alarm for 10 minutes from now, it lights up as expected.

STILL NOT WORKING on my iPhone 5 IOS 9.0.2

I have this issue too. 9.0.2 update has not helped. I can't snooze, as soon as I touch the phone, the alarm turns off.

I bought an iPhone 6S and traded in my 5S but honestly, there are so many annoying little niggles with iOS 9 that if I hadn't traded in, I'd go back to 5S and iOS 8. I've had more problems and spent more hours with Apple support about iOS 9 than I have in my entire 15 years with Macs.

I would also say that the quality of support has dramatically deteriorated. I had an Apple ID/ Family sharing issue which I sought advice for via emailing support, talking to the guys in store and an hour on the phone with support, couldn't fix the issue. In the end it was a simple field that no one had mentioned before. Apple seem to be in such a rush to release product (I've heard whisperings of a bloody car!) that their ease of use for the consumer and their employee knowledge have taken a massive hit. It's a real shame.

My screen ALWAYS comes on when my alarm goes off, but by the time I reach over to snooze, the screen turns off. Then I have to hit the home button to get it turn back on, just to hit snooze. Sometimes the home button will recognize my finger so quickly, that it unlocks the phone and shuts off the alarm. It's making me crazy.

This is similar to a change that started in iOS7 where when you push a button to wake up the device, and start to swipe on the screen, while maybe reading a notification before finishing the swipe. The device doesn't pay attention to the fact that you're mid-gesture, and will shut off the screen again. So stupid.

I swear, each major release of iOS gets worse and worse. They change some of the dumbest things, and never bring them back.

I'm experiencing the same issue with my iPhone 6S Plus. I don't recall having the problem with my iPhone 6 Plus, but that phone only had iOS9 on it for a short time. And I too only experience this intermittently. I am trying to remember to hit the side button to snooze but I find that hard to do when I am half asleep. : ) I also have a second alarm set for a later time since I tend to accidentally shut off the alarm since the home button is so quick to respond. Glad to see others are experiencing this since I was worried something was wrong with my phone. Hopefully Apple will fix this (and the screen rotation bug) soon.

Wife and I both have a 6s' with 9.0.2 and our screens doesn't wake up. I have an Apple Watch as well but she does not. More often than not I end up turning the alarm off trying to get the screen to wake up to snooze it. Didn't know about the volume button but will try that tomorrow. Still would be nice if the screen actually worked correctly.

This happened to me again this morning, but I've adjusted to hitting the side switch to snooze. Maybe we'll be lucky and the iOS 9.1 update will correct this. I didn't see it listed as a bug fix however. We'll just have to wait and see if the problem persists after the update.

I upgraded to the 6S a few days ago. Now my screen doesn't come on when the alarm goes off. The volume AND power buttons are all for snooze. I'm running 9.0.2

9.1 didn't fix it for me either.

Worked as a one off the other morning but today screen was dark again. I first experienced this problem with my 5s the day after upgrading to ios9. It's carried over to my 6s. As others have said it seems to only be a problem when the phone has been idle for a long time (e.g. overnight). I also schedule do not disturb but that is off by the time the alarm sounds.

I can swipe the screen to turn the alarm off even though the screen is blank! I've also noticed that after this happens and I unplug my phone the screen doesn't light up. Normally unplugging my phone causes the screen to light up.

Fails again, I'm watching the screen properly activated alternate days, or one day if it works and next fails. I find no logic.
