Q: Sometimes there's no sound on notifications after iOS9 update

So I updated my iOS devices (iPhone 6Plus, iPad 4 and iPod Touch 5) with the new iOS 9 on 17th September and since then I have noticed a weird thing. For most of the apps such as whatsapp, viber, Facebook Messenger, Gmail and some games (for which I have set the notifications as active), there's no notification sound but still the notification comes up on the screen. This happens even with the native messaging app (whether I send a text or iMessage). When there's another notification from the same app, then notification plays the sound or at times the sound stutters for multiple notifications from same app (e.g.: whatsapp group texts).

So anyone else facing the same issues? Does anyone know a solution? I have tried restarting, restoring and updating my devices to iOS 9 again and the mute buttons on my iPhone and iPad weren't ON while facing the issues. The volume is at max level.

I guess its already time for Apple to release iOS 9.1 fixing the issues.

iOS devices that were updated:

iPhone 6Plus - 128GB

iPad 4 - 64GB

iPod Touch 5 - 16GB

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9

I have noticed that most notification don't play the notification sound. I go check Settings/Sound, and it seems to correct it ... for a little while. I notice the issue probably three or four times per day.

I also notice that sometimes, I turn off the display and don't get the close/off sound. Sometimes I plug it in and don't hear the battery charging "wurmp" sound.

I've even tried toggling off the Change with Buttons setting.

I just updated to iOS 9.0.1, and it's no better. In fact, it might be a little worse.

I wish it were easier to understand when you're adjusting Volume and when you're adjusting Ringer, and where you have to be to adjust each.

Someone called Taurus Writer on another message board suggested the following (last July, but for a similar problem):

I spent weeks trying to solve this issue and I checked my Do Not Disturb settings countless times...however, look in your list of Messages...does any Message have the MOON next to that Contact? Click on that Message, click on Details, and you will see that you have Do Not Disturb on for THAT specific Contact.

This worked for me for the problem after iOS 9.0.1 and it would explain why some people find the problem is intermittent - Do Not Disturb (somehow introduced by iOS 9.0.1) for some callers and not others.

I Have the same thing. Only intermittent notification sounds on messenger and whatsapp. Using iPhone 5s with iOS 9.0.1

Also, sometimes I'll get a notification sound, and when I check it, it's for a message from a couple of hours ago

Yes, I'm having this same problem, too. Updating to 9.0.1 seemed to fix it, for about 1/2 a day. With 9.0 I was having an issue where the sounds would cut off - like just the beginning *blip* of the notification sound would play. Now with 9.0.1, I get no sound at all, no vibration, but the screen does illuminate. I've noticed that if the screen is on, or if I have received a second notification within a few seconds of the first notification, the sounds and vibration work properly. This is happening with gmail, text messages, messenger, CalAlarm app, etc.

I'm right there with you, I'm having the exact same issues with literally the same exact apps you mentioned. I got the 9.0.1 update and that did nothing at all to fix the issue. Hopefully something comes along soon enough to fix this, cause it's getting to be quite frustrating.

I just tried upgrading to the 9.1 beta, still the exact same issues.

I've tried wiping the phone and restoring. Also tried wiping the phone and just starting from scratch. It still does it.

Same problem here. I'll turn my screen on and find out I've had messages sent to me hours ago, but no notification sound to let me know theyd arrived.

HAppens in WhatsApp and Apple Messages all the time.

All seems to be since the iOS 9 update. 9.0.1 too.

Have also experienced the issue where it finally started to play a notification sound (glass) but the tone gets clipped after the first 'ting' then the volume rapidly goes to quiet like someone had quickly put their finger over the speaker.

Its really frustrating as I'm constantly apologising for late replies to messages.

Am using iPhone 6 Plus 64gb.

HAve also noticed that the Siri sound when you hold the home button has stopped playing too. Works fine on my iPad though.

Same problem here, running iOS 9.0.1 on an iPhone 5s. It seems to affect all notifications, whether for built-in apps, third-party apps — even phone calls.

I am having the same issue after the update. My sound was fine. I get partial notification sounds. When i do the tone sounds like its sick. I restart the phone and it seems ok until later. It works when it wants to. I have updared my phone and my husbands and girls ipads but not my ipad. They need to fix the sound issue. even the ios 9 to ios 9.0.1 said it was going to fix sound problems i dont see it rather hear it yet!

Same issue here with a brand new 6s plus.  Particularly with respect to messages, SOMETIMES I get the proper notifications but most of the time no sound and even though I get the lock-screen notice, the phone doesn't light up.  Very frustrating, luckily my Apple Watch is letting me know as a back up but still not happy.

Right! At the time of my first post, I was using my iPhone 5s. I have since received my 6s Plus, and the odd sound problems are there, too. Most times, Siri doesn't play that "now, I'm listening" tone. Messages generally do not play a sound. I use IFTTT to get notifications, and most times they don't play a sound. Half the time, it doesn't even vibrate. I don't have an Apple Watch for a backup, either.

I checked the Do Not Disturb settings, and they're okay and don't seem to affect this.

I checked my volume regularly, and it shows right in the middle.

C'mon, Apple. You can fix this!
