Q: Sometimes there's no sound on notifications after iOS9 update

So I updated my iOS devices (iPhone 6Plus, iPad 4 and iPod Touch 5) with the new iOS 9 on 17th September and since then I have noticed a weird thing. For most of the apps such as whatsapp, viber, Facebook Messenger, Gmail and some games (for which I have set the notifications as active), there's no notification sound but still the notification comes up on the screen. This happens even with the native messaging app (whether I send a text or iMessage). When there's another notification from the same app, then notification plays the sound or at times the sound stutters for multiple notifications from same app (e.g.: whatsapp group texts).

So anyone else facing the same issues? Does anyone know a solution? I have tried restarting, restoring and updating my devices to iOS 9 again and the mute buttons on my iPhone and iPad weren't ON while facing the issues. The volume is at max level.

I guess its already time for Apple to release iOS 9.1 fixing the issues.

iOS devices that were updated:

iPhone 6Plus - 128GB

iPad 4 - 64GB

iPod Touch 5 - 16GB

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9

I have the same problem.  When the screen is locked, no sound for emails or text messages.  I have sound for incoming phone calls.  When I'm using the phone, then the sound works for emails and text messages.  It doesn't vibrate or show up on the screen.  I have to open the phone to see it.

    Frustrating!!!!

I've just noticed that the 9.0.2 update is out, but the bug fix list doesn't seem to address this either. Will update the thread once I've installed it though.

i had the same problem , i use iphone 5s .. also the photos app used to hang while scrolling .. i called up APPLE customer care .. they were very responsive and helped me out .. All you have to do is go to Settings\General\Reset\Reset All Settings  .. and the issues you face might be solved .. mine has ..the reason as i understood from the customer care is that the add on that came with the IOS supports 6s versions .. by resetting you restore it to default settings .. my phone is working now

Okay, I installed 9.0.2 and still doesn't appear to be fixed. I have 2 weekday morning alarms set. The first one doesn't wake up the screen when it plays the sound. The later one DOES wake up the screen. Still getting mixed performance for other notifications.

Performing a Settings Reset is something I really do not want to do. But I guess I'll consider it.

Same situation for me - no improvement in the lack of notifications from Messages.  I would think this would be a high priority for Apple, higher than the stability of podcasts and the other items addressed in 9.0.2, but I guess we wait some more.

HAve also noticed that the Siri sound when you hold the home button has stopped playing too. Works fine on my iPad though.

I know this isn't the main issue you're seeing but I just wanted to touch on your last point. Siri no longer activates an audible "beep" when holding the home button down. This will only occur if there are headphones plugged into the iPhone.

    Reference discussion post:

iOS 9 Siri does NOT beep.

I'm reinstalling iOS 9.0.2 as part of a full restore now, using an iCloud backup. Apps are still reinstalling, but so far I'm encouraged — notifications seem to be working properly again. (I hadn't noticed an improvement after upgrading to 9.0.2 over the air.)

I wouldn't sweat the fact that notifications aren't explicitly mentioned in Apple's 9.0.2 release notes. It's not unusual for those updates to address issues they don't specifically mention.

An hour or so of using iOS 9.0.2 and notifications seem to be working so far. Crossing fingers and will update if it goes south later in the day. I seem to recall that notifications in 9.0 and 9.0.1 worked ok for a while, then stopped later in the day.

9.0.2 didn't seem to fix my notification problem, even after wiping and restoring with a fresh install from iTunes instead of OTA.  I guess I continue to wait and keep checking my phone for messages.

This is a very simple step, but just want to make sure that you've confirmed in Settings > Notifications > [Affected Application] that "Allow Notifications", "Show in Notification Center", and "Sounds" switches are all activated (appearing in Green).

UPDATE - Restoring my phone from iTunes w/ 9.0.2 actually seems to have fixed my issue.

Just to clarify so it's helpful for others who may be having this similar issue. Did you restore your iPhone in iTunes and just simply reinstall the iOS using recovery mode and choosing "Update" on the prompt in iTunes and not erase the iPhone, or did you restore the iPhone in iTunes and restore from backup or setup as new?

    Thanks for clarifying!

Yup, great point - should clarify.  I actually fully restored the phone to factory through iTunes, which in the process re-installed 9.0.2.  Then I restored from a backup I made right before I wiped the phone.  Previously I had just upgraded to 9.0.2 via settings and that didn't fix the issue.

It's been about two hours now and so far everything is working as expected.
