Q: Sometimes there's no sound on notifications after iOS9 update

So I updated my iOS devices (iPhone 6Plus, iPad 4 and iPod Touch 5) with the new iOS 9 on 17th September and since then I have noticed a weird thing. For most of the apps such as whatsapp, viber, Facebook Messenger, Gmail and some games (for which I have set the notifications as active), there's no notification sound but still the notification comes up on the screen. This happens even with the native messaging app (whether I send a text or iMessage). When there's another notification from the same app, then notification plays the sound or at times the sound stutters for multiple notifications from same app (e.g.: whatsapp group texts).

So anyone else facing the same issues? Does anyone know a solution? I have tried restarting, restoring and updating my devices to iOS 9 again and the mute buttons on my iPhone and iPad weren't ON while facing the issues. The volume is at max level.

I guess its already time for Apple to release iOS 9.1 fixing the issues.

iOS devices that were updated:

iPhone 6Plus - 128GB

iPad 4 - 64GB

iPod Touch 5 - 16GB

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9

You know what's weird, I shut off the notification on Apple Watch for any given app; calendar, mail, outlook, messages, and then the notifications for that app return to my phone.

Makes my Apple Watch kind of useless, but, I'd rather them on my phone.

Yeah the Apple watch will stop certain notification sounds. It's a "feature"

    This forum discusses this

Watch overrides audible notification alerts on iPhone

This is an apple support article that confirms it

About notifications on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

You can have both, but you have to disable wrist detection. I don't know why there isn't another way to disable that. So far disabling this feature stops the watch from locking when you remove it from your wrist. It still detects when I life my wrist to see it.

Thanks. I see that now.  I'm an idiot. Why don't they print that somewhere?

Has anyone figured this out yet? I have an iPhone 6 with iOS 9.2.1, and my calendar alerts randomly stop working. I don't have Do Not Disturb on, the volume is up, the sound is not muted... there is no reason the phone should not make a sound. Also, I DON'T have an Apple watch or any other devices nearby, just my phone.

The only fix I've found-- and this is weird-- is to go in and choose a different sound for the calendar alerts. When I click on the different sounds (only using the ones that come with the phone for this), they all play their respective sound EXCEPT the one that I just had as a calendar alert-- when I click on that one, it just vibrates, no sound. I picked a different sound, calendar alerts worked fine... for a couple of days. Now the new sound that I chose has stopped working, but the old sound that I was using before is back to working. So I switched again.

I have not noticed this happening with texts or calls, and I don't have too many other alerts set up, so I can't say for sure if it happens for anything other than the calendar. But it's really annoying, I've set those alerts for a reason.

So not only does the alerts go in and out.... And also my assigned iTunes purchased alert tones go back in forth from working to reverting back to the tones that came with the phone, but also my wife's calendar wigged out when she woke up one morning and about 75% of the info disappeared...

I just got a new iPhone 6s, everything was fine and then all of a sudden no notification sounds for incoming email, text, app notification etc...  it was driving me crazy...  I found this thread but all the solutions I had tried and some of the suggestions here didn't work...  I called Apple Care...  and they checked all the different settings I had already checked...  THEN, she asked me, the button on the left side of the phone above the volume control do you see orange? I said YES! she said flip the switch up! Apparently while messing with the phone the sound/notification switch was inadvertently turned off...  Ugh! Hope this helps others!

Great! Flicking that little switch on the side of the phone above the volume fixed everything. It had nothing to do with software or settings for me. Thanks

I am having a similar problem on my iPhone 6S with iOS 9.3.1.

Many of my calendar alerts appear on the notification screen but do not play the alert sound, while some other apps' push notifications do play a sound. I have double checked all the settings. The phone is not in silent/vibrate; the ringer volume is turned up, "Ringer and Alerts" is turned up, Calendar Alerts is set to a tone, etc. Very annoying as I rely on this to remind me of meetings.

Like so many others I have noticed this intermittent problam as well. Mine comes with a little twist.

when my notifications cease, I not only don't hear the sound, but also do not get the vibration which should accompany it. When this ocurs, it affects all notifications  including phone calls and text messages. I have found that I can bring all notifications back, at least for awhile, by cycling the switch on the upper left side of the phone. After doing this, all my sounds and notifications work as expected. They will work as expected sometimes as long as a few weeks, sometimes it is just days or less.

This occurs  on both my wife's phone and mine. Before it occured on my phone, we had replaced my wife's phone, under warranty, twice. I have done total resets as well as several apple IOS upgrades with no success. I have taken the phone to the apple store and have spoken with apple support  on the phone. It is very interesting that they always tell me they have never heard of this problem before and can never seem to help me. Hmmmmmm..

It finally works! But, isn't it a button to lock screen view rotation? Just switch off notifications but it doesn't avoid vertical to horizontal rotation! IOS 9 bug? Apple support made me waste my time!

PD: I thought this button was like in my iPad, but it's got another mission! Sorry!
