I had the usual "slide to upgrade" loop problem when upgrading to iOS 9 and now that I have upgraded to iOS 9.0.1 all my contacts are missing. Is there any way to get them back? I did not have any phone back-up prior to the update, I know very stupid from my side...... 😟

Very same issue with my iPhone5 - slide to upgrade issue going from ios7 to 9. Now on to 9.0.1. Can access the phone again, but all contacts are gone. Unbelievably annoyed by this.
What were you syncing your contacts with? A supported application on the computer, a cloud service such as iCloud or Google? Without any of that, since you already state you do not have a backup, the data is lost.
