Did you make sure to have the latest version of iTunes, 12.3,  installed?

If yes, what happens if you click on "Check for updates"? Any error messages given?

Did you try to use the software update feature on the phone in Settings/General/Software update?

Did you choose the option to download only and install later? This will download the firmware first and when this is done, the iOS will be installed in a second step.

Also, iTunes has to be able to contact Apple servers during the update. Make sure that no security software is blocking that.

downloaded ios9 and now phone5 is not working . i cannot even switch it off coz the screen doesn't work iether

1. Install the latest version of iTunes on your computer.
2. Plug in your device to your computer.
3. In iTunes, select your device.
4. In the Summary pane, click Check for Update.
5. Click Download and Update.
