Lost sound control on my iMac running OSX 10.9.5. The sound control is greyed out with a small mute symbol at the bottom of the panel. No sound in any app but I have sound when I plug in my headphones. Looking for help...

Assuming your sound settings in System Preferences are set to normal, first trying doing a re-boot. If that does not solve the problem then reset the NVRAM (see below)
Thx for the response. Tried the NVRAM reset, but no change.
Sound control panel looks like this
No internal speaker option available.
Tried plugging my headphones in and out of the headphone jack 5-6 times and a few seconds later my internal speakers started working again.
Strange behavior....
But sound is now working again.
