I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro, which according to Apple does NOT support Windows 10 under Boot Camp.
Despite this, my Windows 7 installation reports that my computer is ready to update and the only incompatibility will be Bluetooth, which won't work. Has anyone tried this? Any issues? Am I asking for trouble if I give it a go?

Give it a go. Apple has not put this in a list, because they do not have certified BC6 drivers for your hardware. You can use generic drivers instead.

Thanks for the speedy reply - that's encouraging. Any idea where I would get a suitable generic driver from please?
I managed to run the Windows 10 Preview on a Macbook Pro 2010, which is not supported. I installed it anyway, and when it was time to install the drivers I just ran them in Windows 7 compatibility mode.
I tried on a Macbook Pro 2011 but it's giving the Bad Pool Error and continuously reboots. Haven't been able to even go on a safe mode. Any suggestions? I have the latest El Captain OS.

Hmm - not so encouraging! Does this mean you can't go back to Windows 7 / 8 if you wanted to?

Can you boot from the Windows Installer and try a Windows Repair? Is your 2011 MBP a dual-GPU Mac?
I can boot but as soon as I login it crashes in few seconds. Even have difficulty going in safe mode... mostly it crashes. Once I was able to login and stayed and I removed most of the items from startup but still the same issue is there and I cannot go back to Windows 7.
Do you similar crashes on the OS X side? If you have a dual-GPU Mac (you have AMD GPUs), was your Mac given the logic board replacement?
Presumably, as a last resort, you could wipe the Windows partition with Boot Camp and then reinstall Windows 7 from scratch?
Well, I plucked up the courage to give it a go and now have a mostly working Windows 10. Even my bluetooth mouse works, though not the scroll wheel.
The only slight irritations I've come across so far are that keyboard brightness & volume controls don't work. I tried following Apple's instructions to update Boot Camp drivers, but the installer just gave me an error message. If anyone has any tips on a fix for this, I'd love to hear them.
At least I have a usable installation of Windows 10 for when I really need to use it, so thanks, Loner T, for the encouragement.
Check Device Manager for any unknown and/or missing devices. If your HID Devices do not have an Apple Keyboard driver, most of your special function keys will not work. Do you get BC6 drivers when you run Apple Software Update?

In Device Manager the only item with a yellow exclamation mark is Bluetooth USB Host Controller. Attempting to update this, no driver can be found.
Under Human Interface Devices, there is no Apple keyboard driver. Under Keyboards, there are 3 HID Keyboard Devices shown. Each of these is up to date, it says.
Running Apple Software Update reports that software is up-to-date.
Is this the end of the road?!

YES! Brilliant. It took me a while to realise that I already had the file in the Bootcamp update Drivers folder.
I now have functioning brightness and volume keys.
