Lumix DMC-LX1 RAW with Aperture: here's how to do it.

If you trawl through the various posts here you'll probably be able to put together a method for getting Aperture to work with RAW files from your Lumix DMC-LX1.

Here's the entire procedure in one post:

1) Open this file on your Mac in a text editor (it's a good idea to make a backup of this file while you're at it):
/System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/I mageIO.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Raw.plist

Use your text editor to find the two instances of "DMC-LC1" and change them to "DMC-LX1"
Save with your admin password. If you can't save to the same location, save to another location and drag and drop the file back into the correct location

2) You need the latest version of Apple's Digital Camera RAW Support Update. If you don't use this then Aperture will incorrectly guess the size of the DNG files you are going to create below. So download and install here:
Universal: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/digitalcamerarawsupportupdate10universal. html
PowerPC: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/digitalcamerarawsupportupdate10ppc.html

(Apple will likely update this from time to time so you might want to search Support for "Digital Camera RAW Support Update")

3) Get Adobe's free DNG convertor for Mac:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=Macintos h

4) Use it to covert your images to .DNG files. These are essentially RAW files but "in theory" have the proprietary aspect of RAW taken out of the file ( Read about it: http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/ )

Set your DNG conversion preferences as follows:
http://www.metaclarity.com/users/pat/galleries/tech/AptDNG/ApertureDNGDMCLX1.html

5) Import your .DNG files into Aperture and get to work.

You should also be able to open your DNG files in Preview and iPhoto now as well.

Hope this helps someone who struggled like me.

Nice Job, Pat, thank you.

This works perfectly with my PPC iMac G5 and Aperture 1.5 (I cannot use 1.5.1 owing to the printing glitch with my HP DJ90 I reported earlier).

The original LX-1 RAW file shows 16.1 mB on the SD card, and 8.49 mB once imported into Aperture, with all the RAW adjustment sliders available in Aperture's Adjustments HUD. No more TIFF or PSD file bloat.

Colors look fine to me and the full 16:9 aspect ratio of the original is preserved. Now maybe there's more tweaking that can be done to the parameters in the Raw.plist file but this works well. What on earth is taking Apple so long to respond to the broad outcry from users of this and other fine cameras whose RAW formats are not recognized within Aperture? Doesn't supporting more formats/cameras translate into market share and sales/profits?

One other thing of note. If you modify your .DNG files in Adobe Camera RAW before you import them into Aperture then when importing the image dimesions will be wrong. Likewise, they will be wrong in iPhoto and in Preview.

The fix for this is very simple: lock your DNG files using the Finder Info window (use Apple Alti to do so for more than one file at once) before you start working with them in Aperture, Photoshop, Bridge, Lightroom, iPhoto or whatever else. These app's all store modifications in a centralised or local cache from what I understand, so your DNG files will reflect the changes you make in each application (though not in the other applications) and your files will continue to open properly in all the applications.

It's a small chore that it would be great to see Apple fixing for us!

I'm having problems with these instructions, i.e. it doesn't work. I downloaded the latest DNG converter, and RAW plugin from Apple today. My Macbook's a few days old.

I read above that with trial it's not supposed to work, and I have 1.5.2 trial, but I can't look at the photos in Preview either. However, Finder does show thumbnails. And Aperture briefly shows a picture that then goes blank.

At the moment the Raw.plist contains:

<key>LEICA-DIGILUX 2</key> <string>Panasonic DMC-LX1</string> <!-- 10.4.6 -->
<key>Panasonic DMC-LX1</key> <!-- 10.4.3 -->

But I did try this earlier and it didn't work either:

<key>LEICA-DIGILUX 2</key> <string>Panasonic-DMC-LX1</string> <!-- 10.4.6 -->
<key>Panasonic-DMC-LX1</key> <!-- 10.4.3 -->

The latter is exactly what the instructions would tell me to do, but the original files contain "Panasonic DMC-LX1" string.

I really need some solution before I'm going to buy Aperture.

The raw.plist code should read:

<key>LEICA-DIGILUX 2</key> <string>Panasonic-DMC-LX1</string> <!-- 10.4.6 -->
<key>Panasonic-DMC-LX1</key> <!-- 10.4.3 -->
<dict>

So using the hypen is right. This works on my machine. Did you restart once you'd done it?

Also, did you lock the .dng files in the Finder.

I'm sad to say this, but if you want to avoid all this hassle, try the Beta of Adobe Lightroom. It works flawlessly with the RAW files directly from the DMC-LX1 and DNG files. Seems Adobe rate this camera more than Apple do!

I agree with everything you say. The UI on Lightroom is ugly (although the new Bridge beta is better so maybe things are going that way) but for me the main issue when adjusting images is speed and ease of use. I reckon Adobe has Apple totally licked on the former and are pretty close on the latter. For that reason I'm heading more and more towards Lightroom.
