Is there any way to prevent my Mac from creating dot underscore files?

I work on a lot of JPEG, PNG & PDF files using both my personal Mac and work Windows computer, each time I open a file from the jump drive I use for these on my Mac it creats a ._ file that is only visible when I open the drive on my work computer. What are these files created for? And more importantly, How do I stop these additional files from being created?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

DS_Store is the name of a file in the Apple OS X operating system for storing custom attributes of a folder such as the position of icons or the choice of a background image. The name is an abbreviation of Desktop Services Store, reflecting its purpose.

The Mac OS does that to preserve the resource fork data on a drive that is not formatted for the Mac. See this topic for more on the subject.

Be careful what you remove from a DOS/Windows formatted drive. If for instance you copy legacy Mac TrueType fonts, or Mac Type 1 PostScript fonts to such a drive, then delete the ._ files, you will destroy the fonts. Such fonts have all of their main data in the resource fork rather than the data fork.
