iPad Mini 4 LONGER Than Mini 2 and 3?

I have searched all over and can't find this question answered anywhere. Actually, I think I've discovered the answer but am amazed it's not discussed.

I had an iPad Mini 2, I just purchased an iPad Mini 4. I love it, however finding a case that fits has been a challenge. Almost ALL retailers are carrying cases they CLAIM "Are for iPad Mini 3 AND 4" not true!

I have so far gotten two said cases. Well, the iPad Mini 4 DOESN'T FIT. It seems to be just slightly taller but everywhere you look people claim the 3 and 4 uses the same case. I just did some research here and it SEEMS the prior Mini's were 7 3/4" tall and the 4 is 8" tall. Of course, you can't find any store that realizes the 4 won't fit in a case made for a 3. Nor do you yet see cases that claim they are just for the 4. I'm am going to drop this new Mini if I don't get a proper case pronto. 😐

Am I crazy? I'm about to return the second "3 and 4" case... and scared to try another.

I would wait until cases show up that are verified as fitting the iPad mini 4 only and not "compatible" will all of them.

As you've found, claims that mini 2 & 3 cases will fit the mini 4 are probably not to be believed.

Here are the dimensions for all the iPad mini models:

iPad mini

7.87 in × 5.3 in × 0.28 in (200 mm × 135 mm × 7 mm)

iPad mini 2 & mini 3:

7.87 in × 5.3 in × 0.29 in (200 mm × 135 mm × 7 mm)

iPad mini 4:

8 in × 5.3 in × 0.24 in (203 mm × 135 mm × 6 mm)

I myself had a problem with a clear back shell that claimed to fit the mini 2 despite the fact that it was made for the original mini. Yes, it fit but was tight enough that it didn't snap on properly and was too tight, eventually cracking the snap-on corners. It didn't actually break the corners off but the plastic developed stress cracks where it was obviously stressed. The difference in thickness between the original mini and the mini 2 is only .01"

The height difference (.13" taller) as well as the thickness difference (.05" thinner) would cause me to believe that only iPad mini 4 specific cases should only be used.

I suppose in the meantime, you could wrap your mini 4 in a bath towel to protect it. 😝

Return the case. You may have to wait for these cases to be manufactured...If you go with an genuine Apple product meant for a mini 4 as I linked to above, you can be guaranteed that it will fit.

Seems as if a lot of manufacturers are making the claim that the mini 4 will fit in a mini 3 case (they did the same with the mini 2 & mini 3, claiming the case made for the mini 1 would "100% fit" a mini 2 or 3). While some may actually fit and work (soft padded cases with some give or stretch to them), others won't (hard-shell snap-on or back shell snap-on) and it's wrong for manufacturers to make that claim. Redoing a case to fit a specific device involves re-tooling...and re-tooling is expensive.

If you opt for a third-party case, make sure the case is made specifically for the mini 4...or else you stand the chance of it not fitting again.
