Q: Re-Install of iPhoto for Mountain Lion

I have recently had to carry out a clean install of MAC OS 10.8.5 Mountain Lion and in doing so I have lost the iPhoto app that came with our machine back in 2011. I mistakenly presumed that I could re-install iPhoto from the app store, but to my disbelief Apple have removed the app and it appears that you have to install the latest OS to get a iPhoto.

I don't wish to change from Mountain Lion, for reasons I don't need to explain on this forum. So please someone at Apple tell me how I can re-install iphoto back on my 10.8.5 OS. My entire family photo albums are saved in a iPhoto library on an external disc, but I can't view them because my MacBook Pro circa 2011 no longer has the iPhoto app.

Please do not try and suggest that I install a newer OS as I have vital programmes on our machine that will not function correctly on any other OS.

MacBook Pro (17-inch Mid 2010), Mac OS X (10.6.6), MacBook Pro 15" with OS 10.6.8

Sorry Larry, I should have made it clearer. We do not have an DVD disc for iLife 11 or iPhoto, hence the need to download the software, which we now cant do any more since Apple decided not to make it available in the App Store.

You can install from the original source

what is the original source of the software?

If it is a iLife DVD and you have lost or damaged that DVD then you need to purchase a replacement from Amazon or eBay

As to the App store - same as always - you can only purchase current software - you can reinstall software previously purchased from the App store under the purchases tab

    Hi Larry,

I thought we downloaded it off the Apple support site, but it was so long ago I could be mistaken. Either way we do not have the iLife suite on DVD, so maybe like you suggest, its off to eBay. Thanks all the same.

If you downloaded it form the app store it should be in your purchases list - it could be hidden - Hide and unhide purchases in the Mac App Store - Apple Support

Why not reinstall iPhoto from the backup of your boot drive made prior to the clean install of the system?

Thanks Larry, but it's not there for some odd reason. My purchases only seem to go back as far as 2012! It could be an Apple thing ?

I don't really want to do that. The reason we did a clean install and wrote the drive to Zeros, was that we were having issues. The issues have all been fixed now and I suspect there maybe bugs embedded in the copy of the boot drive. But thanks for your input to this problem all the same.

I noticed this morning that it is no more a possibility.

From the Purchase list, iPhoto, but also Aperture, or MountainLion installer, Maverick installer... have been suppressed (not hidden, suppressed!)

You have no way to find and reinstall them if you didn't keep a copy on a physical media (external hard drive, DVD, ...)

You can't either update your iPhoto (or Aperture) version in the case you decide to upgrade OS X from an old to a more recent version... you will stay stuck with your old version of iPhoto (or Aperture), that you can't run on a more recent version of OS X!

That is the best way to reinstall it if you have reinstalled the same version of OS X.

In my case, I've just upgraded to a more recent version of OS X and have no way to update iPhoto to the version compatible with the version of OS X I've installed

I was referring to restoring just the iPhoto application from the backup.  Not the entire backup.
