So why doesn't an iPhone 4S show transit on the maps app? I'm not looking for "It's not supported" answer, I'm looking for a real answer..
And since Hopstop is gonna be killed soon, what should I do? like not use any transit app at all?!

As this article says: "Transit is available in select cities." Read more in the article to see what to do if you are not in one of these cities.

it says in the tiniest font at the bottom:
"*Transit is available on iPhone 5 and later, iPad Pro, iPad Air and later, iPad mini 2, and iPod touch (6th generation) with iOS 9."
and I'm in NYC.

As you said, it says "Transit is available on iPhone 5 or later ..."
But you have an iPhone 4S.
There is your answer.

OK, I admit defeat.
How did we get by without transit maps for the decades before iPhone? Not only can I find NYC transit maps using Safari, but I even find them on some restaurant walls out here in California.
