Font errors when printing

When printing documents with a certain font (Kalinga) the attached happens. This happens system wide and on both the printers in the office. If I open the same document from my iPhone or iPad and print via AirPrint then these artefacts disappear. Likewise if I print to Adobe Acrobat Reader and then print to the actual printer from within Adobe then these artefacts also disappear.

Strange one I know, but it is quite frustrating. Anyone any ideas? Im using a 2013 MBA with all the latest updates installed.

I downloaded a paid version from Monotype (company was paying) so thought better than using one of the free website. I liaised with Monotype and ran through troubleshooting and arrived at the conclusion that it was an error with OS X rather than the font file itself. I attach the font file download for interrogation.I will delete the file in a few days.

It all looks fine on the screen, however the problem seems to occur when printing with the OS X printer software. The problem goes away if I print from Adobe Acrobat Reader as this has a separate printing mechanism which seems to be able to render the font correctly when printing. This bodge is far from ideal.

Have you / can you try to install the attached and then try to print a Kalinga document? The problem letters are W and X.

I've retrieved the font. Please remove the font from your linked site.

The one Klaus1 linked to is most likely an illegal copy. I sincerely doubt he did that knowingly. All kinds of sites make fonts available without checking to see if they are legally able to do so. Users who download them of course don't check in the normal thinking of, "If it's here, it must be free".

There is almost no difference between the two. About all I can find is the one you made available has a copyright date of 2013, and the other, 2006. That, and the older font has 627 glyphs. The newer one has 634.

The letterforms themselves are drawn correctly. There are no extra paths that would be causing the strange blocks.

Something fairly simple you can try. Open the System Preferences and click on Printers & Scanners. Right click in the left column and choose Reset printing system. This clears all installed printers. You will need to setup your printers again as if they've never been added before.

I tried your copy of Kalinga with Word 2011, TextEdit, and a few other common apps. All printed as expected with all letterforms.

The program I use is FontLab Studio. As you can see, far from cheap. They also bought Fontographer from Adobe. Not sure why they wanted that when they already had their own full blown editor. They do sell it for $250 less, though.

About the only free font editor I know of is the open source FontForge. I believe you need to have X11 installed for it to run, and it doesn't look like much of an OS X app (most X11 apps don't).

I don't think it would do you any good to re-outline the glyphs as there's nothing wrong with them now.

Back up all data before proceeding.

Launch the Font Book application and validate all fonts. You must select the fonts in order to validate them. See the built-in help and this support article for instructions. If Font Book finds any issues, resolve them.

Start up in safe mode to rebuild the font caches. Restart as usual and test.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

If you still have problems, then from the Font Book menu bar, select

FileRestore Standard Fonts...

You'll be prompted to confirm, and then to enter your administrator login password.

Also note that if you deactivate or remove any built-in fonts, for instance by using a third-party font manager, the system may become unstable.
