No, the ibooks app requires at least Mavericks.
Best use some other store like kindle or google which might have an ereader compatible with your OS version.

Thanks Tom - keen to use ibooks on laptop sometimes, should I upgrade to Mavericks (processor 2.2 GHz, intel Core i7; 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3).

Why not go to El Capitan, which comes out next week? Which ever os you upgrade to, it's best to test first on a separate partition, so you can go back to your current system in case something essential for you does not work right on the new one.
