I successfully updated to 9.01 and it worked okay (except for some random reboots) until today it went to reboot but never quite recovered. It now flashes the black screen with white apple logo repeatedly but never fully boots. Holding the home and sleep buttons don't help. I don't currently have access to a computer with iTunes, so I don't know if that would help.
If anyone knows of a fix, please let me know. Thanks!

The only thing would be connected to your computer in recovery mode and restore the phone to factory settings. After that use the latest backup to get your data and settings back. Recovery mode is explained in this article:
I've tried what you suggest, both update and restore. I get an unknown error 9. I'm at a loss.
Error 9 is about network and USB connectivity:
Errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1611, 9006.
Sometimes security software can stop your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.
Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't blocking a connection to the Apple servers.
If you still see the error message, check for USB connection issues.
