Q: I moveie 09.  Mid 2010 Macbook pro fully upgraded.  Do I have to upgrade?

I have a macbook pro mid 2010 which has i movie 09 installed.  I have never used it but now need to make a project in I movie.  My mac is fully upgraded to 10.10.5.  In the lower right hand corner when I click on the photo button I cannot get anything to appear.  When I upgraded it converted my photos.  Can I still use I movie 09 or do I need to upgrade.  How can I get my still pictures and additional videos that I did not download directly from the camera into my project?  The current version of I movie is not very highly rated, but I need to be able to access what is in I photo.  Any help or suggestions appreciated.
