Hi all. I have some music that are .FLAC files and want to know what file type I should convert it to so that it stays the same, lossless quality and compatible with iTunes/iPhone.
MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.2)
Apple Lossless format. Converters such as XLD and Max (both free) will do it.
what file extension would that be? I'm using Switch to convert my files.
I believe it is confusingly AAC which also has a lossy version. I don't know for sure as I have no files in that format. Check your file size afterward as it should be similar to FLAC.
Edit: I just converted a 30 sec compressed .m4a file to "Apple Lossless" in XLD and it came out 10MB so that's the right one. It had a .m4a extension too, but is lossless.
alright, so using Switch, you can see on the bottom that I have Output Format as .m4a. Clicking on the Encoder Options, the M4A Encoder Settings Window opens and I have two choice, AAC and ALAC, as you can see. Which one do I choose?

You're welcome. The two formats in your image were for regular compressed AAC, and for Apple Lossless Audio Codec (= ALAC)
