Choosing a modem to co-exist with system

Hello all,

I am in a quandary here trying to decide what to do with my new ISP (Comcast Xfinity). I currently use their router/ modem to get my internet which I route through my Airport Time Machine. Or at least I think. So my time machine is plugged in with WAN which then feeds my iMac by LAN. My MBP and iPhone are then connected wirelessly to the home network which is the same network Comcast provided. Time machince and the comcast gateway are on opposite ends of the house but connected through WAN. So, my question is, since I am spending an extra $10 a month on the gateway from Comcast, I would like to buy a modem to take its place, and save the monthly payment. What modem would be best to use in this situation? Thanks in advance for any input.

Ask Comcast for a list of modems which will be supported with their service for at least the next 3 years.

Post the list here.

Ask Comcast users to comment on their experience with the modems on the list.

Choose a modem.

Here is the list that Comcast gave me. Not verified if it will be good for three years but its good for now. Please let me know if you have any opinions on the options, thanks.

Most of these "modems" are really modem/routers or gateways, which combine the separate functions of a modem and router in one package. All that you really need is a simple modem, since you already have a router (the AirPort Time Capsule).

So, I would recommend that you modify the list to delete any of the approved "modems" that are modem/routers, or gateways.

Among the modems on the list, I have used the Zoom 5341J for about two years with flawless results. But, I'm not a Comcast customer, so I cannot say how well the modem might perform with the service from Comcast.

Either one of the Cisco modems and the Zoom 5341J or 5345 would be my picks.
