10.6.8 combo update Installation failed

Hi all, I am trying to perform a clean install on an external Firewire connected drive. After installing 10.6 from a retail disk I am then running the update from a downloaded 10.6.8 combo update .dmg but the installation fails with the error message

2015/09/26 7:58:39 AMInstaller[240]The Installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance.

Prior to this message the console log shows:

Hello Chris.

Check software update under the Apple logo. Update anything that is mentioned. Check that you have the correct COMBO update. There are two, one for regular users and one for those that require the server version.

There is also a supplemental update to each.

These are the links. For regular https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399?locale=en_GB

Supplemental https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1429viewlocale=en_GB&locale=en_GB

For server version https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1402?locale=en_GB

Supplemental https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1430?viewlocale=en_GB&locale=en_GB

Thanks for your response. It is indeed the combo update and I know that it works as I had updated all my other systems using it. The reason why I download the .dmg and use that is because I have a fairly slow connection and I only have to download once instead of three times. I generally update the OS first as a number of the other updates (Safari,iTunes etc) are then superseded by later versions.

And did you download the supplemental update for your version. I didn't find it for months afterwards, mistakenly thinking they were just reminding me of the need for the combo. Incidentally, you know you can download both again 'over the top of the originals' without havine any effect of files. Might be an idea. Despite it being safe, you should always back up your files when you download an update.

Thanks Klaus,

That's not the only thing that's not working (again 😀) Yes, it seems reasonable that it would appear in Software update but maybe not if it is being downloaded over a previous one?

There are so many pages that have gone missing of late and it all adds to the workload in having to triple check everything. We can't trust the system any more. I think it's part of the process of getting rid of us Snow Leopard stalwarts.

I am now downloading the combo update .dmg again but the point is that the one that I already have definitely worked for however many times I have re-loaded the systems. I am trying to find out if there has been an update applied through the various iterations of OS (10.7, 10.8, 10.9 and now 10.10) that affects the firmware and now stops this working.
