Can't connect M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R

I am trying to connect my m-audio fast track ultra 8r to logic pro but it won't work. It recognises that something is plugged in and the m-audio reacts to sounds into the microphone but it will only record from built-in microphone. I looked it up and you're supposed to press Logic pro X > Control Surfaces > Setup, but there is no "Control Surfaces" when i press Logic Pro X.

Below are two pictures: the first one is from the instruction of what i'm supposed to press and the second one is from my own Logic Pro X. They seem to have removed control surfaces from mine. I have the latest Macbook Pro and the latest Logic Pro X.

I would very much appreciate some help since i have a great urge to start recording. Thank you.

  • his is the final driver release for the Fast Track Ultra 8R
  • Qualified with Mac OS X 10.8.5, 10.9.5, 10.10, 10.10.1
  • Note that Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan (or later) is not compatible and will not be qualified

Here's the Driver page......

Support is way behind the curve, typical for Avid.

Lots of complaints.... http://duc.avid.com/showthread.php?t=347314

If you've already installed the latest drivers.... unplug the Ultra 8r and install the previous set of drivers (from October 2014_ reboot the computer, after it settles then plug in the Ultra 8r, if that doesn't work... follow the exact same procedure with the latest set of drivers. It's important to not have the Ultra 8r plugged in when installing drivers.

What else can you do? Not much.

Hope that M-Audio releases drivers for El Capitan or that the next release of El Capitan fixes some of the problems. You should definitely contact M-Audio about updated drivers for El Capitan.

In the meantime, I hope you backed up your system so you can roll back to the previous operating system that worked. Why do people automatically upgrade without checking to see if your hardware is compatible? It makes no sense.... someone else posted that they were in the middle of a large project and upgraded to El Capitan and their hardware doesn't work and Logic is crashing. You CANNOT rely on Apple releasing fully compatible (or even complete) operating systems these days, they change a lot as Apple is trying to bring iOS and OSX under a single development platform. Apple's latest operating systems have been release in Beta test form, it's never wise to upgrade without checking. If you want to be on the cutting edge, prepare to bleed.

I personally use only Motu products here...

My first Ultralite Mk1 that I bought back in 2006... still works today having successfully used it since 10.3 through to 10.11.4b without issue... thanks to very stable drivers and/or quick responses to OS X updates.

I have since used Ultralite Mk2's and Mk3's without issue along with the 896, 8pre and Traveller range too...

I'm now mainly using their new AVB range.... because of their Network and TBolt connectivity with newer Macs.. which again have worked flawlessly throughout the recent OS X updates...
