Max RAM on mid 2010(7,1) Macbook Pro 8GB or 16GB??

Hai guise,

Here are specs on my mac:

Macbook Pro 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo (13 in) DDR3

Mode: 7,1

Order No: MC374LL/A Model No: A1278 (EMC 2351*)

Current RAM: 4GB in Slot 1(DIMM1), none in Slot 0.

From Apple and Crucial, I've read that the max RAM my Mac can take is 8GB.

However, mac sales indicates that it can take upto 16GB (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memor...o/Upgrade/DDR3)

MacBook Pro 13.3" 2.4GHz (Model ID: 7,1 only) Supports 16.0GB

Any thoughts on how to clear it up?

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

puneet11351, did you upgrade to 16GB of RAM?

I have the same system and am looking to upgrade with either Crucial (https://www.dicksmith.com.au/da/shop/?keywords=16GB+Mac) or OWC (https://www.macfixit.com.au/8-0gb-2-x-4-0gb-owc-pc8500-ddr3-1066mhz-so-dimm-204- pin-ram-bundle/). I would like to know whether the Crucial 16GB RAM will be compatible. If so, which of the five available through Dick Smith would be compatible or most suitable?

Last question: the OWC RAM is 1066MHz; though, the Crucial RAM ranges from 1333MT/s to 1866MT/s. What is the difference in performance and compatibility?

Thank you in advance.

I have a Mid-2012 Macbook Pro 13.

I just did a memory upgrade to 16gb.

Works great.

It only costs about $65 for the memory from Crucial

El Capitan is a memory HOG so the more memory you put in your Macbook the better.

8gb. should be minimum and 16gb. Best.

I just help my friend upgrade his Core-2-Duo Macbook the other day.

Best to replace the hard-drive with an SSD and replace the battery while you are at it.

HI Alex,

Thanks for your response. It is specifically the MacBook Pro Mid-2010 Mode 7,1 that I am interested in. As there appears to be conflicting information from Crucial and OWC of the compatability of 16GB RAM with this model MacBook Pro. OWC says their 16GB RAM is compatible, while a Crucial system check suggests that the RAM is not compatible.

As the preferred Australian supplier stocks Crucial, I'd like to know whether it suits this model MacBook Pro before I purchase the additional RAM.

Thanks again.

OWC has tested their RAM on a 2010 13" MBP and found that it works with 16 GB. If you wish to install 16 GB RAM, get it from OWC.

If Crucial indicates that their RAM will be supported only up to 8 GB RAM, I would not install more than 8 GB Crucial RAM.

Both are trusted vendors of Mac compatible RAM and I would follow their respective recommendations.

Ciao.

Hi OGELTHORPE,

Thanks for your response.

The Crucial system scan was the generic scan that can be done on their website. I suspect that the information from the website may be out of date, and the RAM is in fact supported, as per the OWC RAM.

If indeed the Crucial 16GB RAM is not supported, but the OWC 16GB RAM is supported, what might be the reason for this? I would have assumed the MacBook Pro would have determined what amount of RAM it can support, rather than the manufacturer of that RAM.

Please excuse my ignorance. I am just curious as to how and why.

Thanks again.

OWC and Crucial are the experts regarding their respective RAM. I am not such an expert. However both have been in their respective occupations and have established favorable track records that I am willing to be guided by their recommendations.

If you do want to get a definitive answer, you can contact their respective technical departments. I have done so with both firms, but in regards to other matters.

Ciao.
