iPhone 6s Distorted Sound

Hello All,

I have just received my iPhone 6S (iOS 9.0.1) and i'm really enjoying the new features, however I've noticed that when I have my Ringer Volume turned up full there is a slight crackling/distortion when playing sounds from the bottom external speaker.

The best way I've found to reproduce this issue is by going into settings, turning the ringer volume to full (having the ringer volume anything below full will stop the distortion) and then playing the ringtone "Opening", the speaker will make a minor distorting sound at the high points of the ringtone.

I've spoken to a friend who has a 6S Plus and they have reproduced the same issue, I would like to ask if anyone in the community could try the ringtone above and let me know if they get the same problems with the speaker?

Thanks in advance

Craig

As Slayer said

"first noticed this when sending an iMessage however after some testing I have found a solution that fixed it for me.

In Settings>Music>EQ, etc"

In my case, no setting was selected there, I typed on "desactivate"

And now, sending a message with full volume, I don't have this weird sound distorted or sounding like "too loud" for this speaker.

Thanks Slayer!

I have the exact same problem on my 6s. I had a chat with support and sent the link to this thread to the person I was chatting to. They had me go through all the troubleshooting steps, including using a small brush across the speaker... i was running public beta 3 of ios 9.1. I also did a factory restore through iTunes and the problem was still there on the default ringtone after setting the phone up as a new phone. I did play the ringtone side by side with my iPhone 5 and i do believe the 6s has a louder speaker, when you turn the 6s down a few clicks the distortion goes away or isn't noticeable. SO my guess is the sound is slightly amplified in the software for the new phones or didn't get coded correctly........ or there really is a problem.........in the support chat, i was told to set up an appointment if the restore didn't fix the issue, but the problem is the closest apple store is 90 minutes away, and with the stupid appointment crap, its hard to get there and not be late. last time i went i was 10 minutes late due to some heavy traffic, even though i was going against rush hour traffic so that shouldn't have been to much of the issue. needless to say after complaining enough and pointing out that there were numerous geeks/geniuses standing around doing NOTHING, they finally helped me.

sooo i'm waiting to see if my buddie's iPhone 6s does the same thing, he will get his next week when his contract is up....... got a year to cash in on that warranty so no big worry and i use headphones or my car speakers most of the time anyway for the audio.

Same problem here and I am also running 9.1 beta3. I also restored it as new at to no avail. I do agree with you that the 6s is louder than my previous 6 that I still have. I notice the distortion mostly when I send a text message and the swoosh messes up a little at the end. Funny thing is that if I close the message app or reboot, it goes away for the first 3-5 messages and then returns. It makes me think that apple might be using the same speakers but the software is pushing out more volume and needs to be taken back 5% or so. Hopefully it gets fixed in beta 4.

Hello,

I can not confirm but i do know that when you drive a speaker just past its threshold you get distortion and if I just pull my volume slightly back, it's gone. I also read on the iPhone 6s speaker quality thread that some individual who got a replacement had the same issue again. My wife just got her rose gold 6s and it's got similar distortion when maxed out. If people don't have their volume all the way up, I suspect they will not notice and that this might be a more widespread issue then. I also cannot discern the difference between volume at 100% and just slightly pulled back which leads me to believe that Apple can just implement a fix in the software to prevent us from passing that threshold.

As for the voip, I suspect that might be a 3rd party issue since skype has now fixed it for their app.

In any case, I'm going to wait and see what happens because I suspect that a replacement unit will likely have the same issue.

Cheers

Yes hydrate,

I was thinking like you, since it only happens when the volume is full. Also, when you lower the sound from full to 2 square less (on the sound icon), it gets the same volume as the iPhone 6 in its full volume.

Anyway I called Apple to have it replaced, I also had an issue with the home button which is kinda loose and moving a bit.

Killing 2 birds with one stone 😉
