Q: iPhone 6s Distorted Sound

Hello All,

I have just received my iPhone 6S (iOS 9.0.1) and i'm really enjoying the new features, however I've noticed that when I have my Ringer Volume turned up full there is a slight crackling/distortion when playing sounds from the bottom external speaker.

The best way I've found to reproduce this issue is by going into settings, turning the ringer volume to full (having the ringer volume anything below full will stop the distortion) and then playing the ringtone "Opening", the speaker will make a minor distorting sound at the high points of the ringtone.

I've spoken to a friend who has a 6S Plus and they have reproduced the same issue, I would like to ask if anyone in the community could try the ringtone above and let me know if they get the same problems with the speaker?

Thanks in advance

Craig

I thought it had went away but then I got a text notification and it was still pretty bad. I try to keep to volume down at all times. I don't know, I work with studio speakers and music production and to me it sounds like the software is pushing the volume harder than it should, rather than the speakers being of bad quality. I say that because when I get notifications on the 6s it sounds way louder than what I get on the 5 I own, to my ears.

People, can we conclude something here?

Not every 6s phone has this problem or does it?

if it does then this thread should be massive as to me it sounds like the speaker is blown with any low frequencies using any source.

as so little are posting here i have to assume good phones are out there and will try to get one through apple.  cheers.

i will try beta 4 tonight too.

I'm not everyone will pick up on it... listening to earphones all day it won't be apparent. Plus some may not be discerning, especially if it's just youtube they're watching, where quality is variable.

There does seem like something is over-driving the speakers, but equally, there is a definite vibration/rasping on some notes, esp percussive ones. You can feel the sound pressure on your fingers.

I Confirm, the 9.2 beta 4 doesn't Fix the problem of speakers and don't Fix the problem Of the ear reciever as well. I tried to call the same number (0039 070 948020) and the vibration is there (also with medium volume)

exactly what i noticed. just too much pushing through speakers but also no clarity. wait a minute. it is like it is being compressed?

See volume levels are not gradual as you increase. nothing really heard at 50% volume and cranking up to 80-100 you finally hear all frequencies which could be related to 48 khz sample rate now only used.

I just registered to say that I also noticed distortions on YT videos and also in AVPlayer on my brand new 6S 64gb (iOS 9.1)

I upgraded from 5 (the sucker is 3 years old, and it works like the first day!) to 6S, and on 5 I can crank up volume up to 100% and it's perfect!

Also, I can't notice distortion on ringtones and other system sounds, only on aforementioned video players.

Phone is just 3 days old, and I am very very disappointed

I hope Apple will make a recall for this batch that is affected with this problem.

I will not return it, because I can see there are much worse examples than mine, so I could get phone with even worse problem/s...

    Hello,
I noticed that the sound settings preludium to ringtone at the volume of 90% does not distort - but when I set it as a ringtone sms / mms it distorts at 90%. When I set 80% is fine. It looks like a software error ... hopefully ... I apologize for grammatical errors - google translate.

    Cheers

Same issue here.  iPhone 6S 64g, got it two weeks ago. Sound is generally not quite as clean as what I'm used to from iPhone and it is always slightly garbled or distorted or the speaker has a slight rattle or something esp at volume peaks on certain notes. It's not the worst thing I've ever heard but it's annoying and below my expectation. This happens with all sounds, I notice it most with Spotify music of all types. Perhaps I'll inquire about a replacement at the Best Buy where it came from.

I have switched to 6s plus (from 6 plus) on saturday and at first it sounded really odd (lock sound, keyboard tap sound), it actually sounded different even at side-to-side comparison. But after listening to some audio/youtube side-to-side, the difference is not that big - if any.

But it annoys me anyway, when I hear different lock sound etc... I hope they fix this with an update.

Adjusting the EQ setting simply has no effect on the iPhone 6S - it will still crackle and pop when playing piano content above 75%

In any event, the phone should work perfectly well at all volume levels (perhaps excluding full 100%) regardless of settings. If it doesn't, then there is problem that needs attention ... simple as that.

I doubt after so many 9.2 versions that this is software related and certainly isn't fixed with 9.2 Beta 5.

My wife's 5S does not have any issue at all, so you would expect the 6S to be just as good!

Clearly a poor speaker component that's found its way into so many units (if not all) on the assembly line.

I have had 7 units (6S) and have given up all hope - I reckon that it won't be resolved until next year's iPhone release.

The decision is simple, either put up with the speaker issue and accept it for what it is - enjoying all the other aspects of the 6S .... or go back to a 5S and await the arrival of the next iPhone release.

    The decision is yours

experiencing horrible speaker distortion on sent text message tone and ring tones (particulary Opening tone and Slow Rise which exhibit the "issue" best). When volume is at max or even at 75-80% volume it sounds horribly distorted at the peaks of a tone or sound. It's almost as if the speaker is crackling. I tested the same sounds on a 5s with IOS 9.1 and the sound was NOT distorted so it's obviously a hardware issue but hoping it's a glitch but doubtful. Took the phone to apple the guy (of course) just ran it through some diagnostic test and just told me everything passes. I said well that's great but did you listen to it?! With idk about 100 talking screaming people in the store he puts the phone to his ear and listens to the two tones I mentioned did it the worst and tells me everything sound terrific (I know all mighty apple has no faults) I looked at him and said well there's about 12 people directly around you in a store full of customers and your going to tell me you could hear what I am talking about.."well the phone was right up to my ear" I just shook my head and said your wasting my time and didn't even ask me what he could do for me since the computer told him everything was fine but yet I have found multiple threads on Apples forum site that mention the same type of distortion which didnt affect the 5S. Not sure what to do at this point...this is my 4th 6s from Verizon and they all have done it. I even restored the phone via itunes and no avail. Extremely disappointed...miss my perfect 4s.

also to add I was at BB a few days ago and listened to the 6SP then a 6S and could NOT hear it on the 6SP. Knew I should have kept That gargantuan phone for a reason just not portable enough like the 6s

this this phone ***** Apple went down since SJ died

doesnt matter any more...not like Apple will fix it anyway. I should have gotten a note 5. Apple is just terrible lately. My iPad mini 4 is just as slow as a 4 year old iPad 2. A8 is crap unless they hinder the mini so you buy the air which wouldn't surprise me. My speaker on my 6s is just crappy sounding. The 6s plus IMO resolves this issue but it's the size of a tablet basically and the frame rate it horrendous on that sooooo ur SOL either way
