Q: iPhone 6s Distorted Sound

Hello All,

I have just received my iPhone 6S (iOS 9.0.1) and i'm really enjoying the new features, however I've noticed that when I have my Ringer Volume turned up full there is a slight crackling/distortion when playing sounds from the bottom external speaker.

The best way I've found to reproduce this issue is by going into settings, turning the ringer volume to full (having the ringer volume anything below full will stop the distortion) and then playing the ringtone "Opening", the speaker will make a minor distorting sound at the high points of the ringtone.

I've spoken to a friend who has a 6S Plus and they have reproduced the same issue, I would like to ask if anyone in the community could try the ringtone above and let me know if they get the same problems with the speaker?

Thanks in advance

Craig

I Have the same problem with my 6S. But all ringtones and alerts are fine. I have distortions in some youtube videos.

    For example: http://youtu.be/RRp2YMXTr-U

    Mans voice is distorted.

Can you guys check if you have  the same problem?

That's exactly my sound issue with my 6s. Mens' voice is normally distorted.

I'm having the same issue. I started to notice it when I would get a mail alert or some other alert. Ringtone recreates the problem and that guy's voice on the YouTube video sounds awful unless you turn the volume down halfway. It seems to me as if Apple just put bad speakers in their new phones this year. The sound also seems quieter than it is on previous generation phones. I saw another forum where people say a teardown shows the speakers are the same as iPhone 6, people thought maybe the different aluminum or the difference in space in the speaker chamber cause the distortion. Sounds to me like it's the result of poor quality speakers though...

I've 2 things you should try, because I cannot explain...

1st thing: when my iPhone is fully charged, it seems this distorted sound disappears. At least in the Messages App, when sending or receiving a message in the conversation (the swoop sound).

2nd thing: when I put my finger on the Touch ID, and moving in circular motion (the bouton seems to move a little). I've noticed in the YouTube video posted above that when I place my finger on the Touch ID to hold this button, the creaking seems to disappears. So is it this button that moves on certain sound waves? You know like sometimes when you have sound buffer that are doing a creaking sound, you move them, or hit them and it stops.

    Let me know

For me there is no difference.

I will try to download this video from YT and play in other app. Maybe it's a 3rd party apps problem in my case? Like Skype before update.

Hi there, i'm having this issue on iphone 6S 64GO. SG

No EQ presets / full volume.

Distorsion and cracks @90% Volume on :

    - ringtones (Opening and slowrise)

    - music and videos with low frequencies.

    - recordings

    This is very annoying ! I hope it's a software issue ... (every new generation S = replacement) ...

    Regards.

I exchanged my first iPhone 6s plus due to distortion and dead pixels. The second one also has audio distortion. I have a feeling they are all like this. Apple is using two different chipsets in this generation. I wonder if that has to do anything with this issue. Maybe there will be a software fix.

I agree with you that most are probably affected by this issue. I have confirmed 4 6s with this issue. I think it is best to wait and see what the exact problem is instead of going through the hassle of exchanging now for one that has the same problem.

I am running iOS 9.0.2 on a 16 GB iPhone 6s . When I attempt to use the speakerphone while making a call the volume diminishes considerably and the sound distorts and skips. Is this a hardware problem or a software issue? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

I've made some research about this issue on the internet. Some people say that after their replacement, the problem is gone. There is one guy saying he went to an Apple Store, and he tried many units until he finally got one without this issue.

On the other hand, there is this guy saying that this problem isn't a problem, here's what he says: There is no fix. The new iPhones are very water resistant, and in the past the speaker was a large cause of iPhone water damage. This new speaker is water resistant, which helps the iPhone against water damage. The difference is, it sounds terrible. Waterproofed speaker, sounds worse. No fix.

So where is the truth? Since all iPhone 6S I've tried had this issue.

Hey Craig, just checking in to see what you learned at your appointment at the Apple Store - software or hardware problem?  Did you swap your phone for a new one, or just keep what you had?  My appointment is tomorrow, Tuesday morning.  I have also been wondering if the 6s Plus has the same issues?  Thanks,  Jeff

I Also have an appointment this coming Friday. I find that Siri sounds distorted to my ears as do certain rings and music.

Curious to know what you find out

For me the problem still exists after trying to play the same video from 1st party apps. No change after YT app update

Craig and others, I kept my appointment at the Apple Store today.  They listened to my iPhone and heard the distortion.  They immediately replaced my phone and I walked out within a couple of minutes.  My new iPhone 6s does not have any sound problems.  So it must have been a hardware issue.  Glad I got this worked out.  Jeff  (iPhone 6s, iOS 9.0.2)
