Because Apple operates in all 50 states and is obligated to collect sales taxes in the states it operates in. Internet commerce is not tax free in all circumstances That’s a myth.

there should be an option to pay now or submit the purchase to the purchasers home state with the purchasers information so the state could bill the purchaser. i for one would not pay the tax bill.

In the US the internet store is required to collect state sales tax on any purchases where they have a physical presence in the purchasers state.

At some point it may go to all internet sales. 

The law does not provide for this option.

Just as you have no option when you go to Wal Mart or Best Buy,
