So I put my iPad Air 2 (that has an Apple Smart Case on it) in my backpack. I was heading to the airport to go on a 12 hour flight.
When I arrived and got my iPad out of the backpack, it was bent! I took it to a Genius and they switched it for free but they're saying that it was very exceptional because this is an accidental damage. Here are some pictures of it..
Notice the smart case in the background, it didn't even protect it.

How would you expect a smart case to protect anything against the force that you have obviously applied to the iPad?

Well, there was no force implied to the iPad. I always take care of it and the backpack wasn't on my back during the flight. I put it on the side, standing, leaning on the wall during the whole flight. I would totally notice if there was any force implied to it.
So your contention is that the iPad spontaneously bent with no force applied to it?
When I said there was no force implied to it, I meant there wasn's a noticeable force. I always have it on my backpack. And let me ask you this, why put on a case that doesn't protect the iPad from a little force? That's why they made the case in the first place.
No, if the structure of the iPad has enough force applied to bend it, a case will NOT protect it, unless the case is a special design of aircraft grade aluminum or titanium. The iPad Smart case is neither of those.
Well here's the thing, I shared this experiment because I wanted to point out something. Apple's devices these days (such as iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2) are so weak, easily-bent, and sensitive. They're made out of aluminum, a big sheet of aluminum will easily bend if a small force was implied to it! They just got the new iPhone out and they have strengthen it, and that's what I want them to do with the iPad.
An experiment? Your best bet in this situation would be to send the Apple employee that replaced the iPad, that you damaged a sincere thank you. Most people that cause such physical damage to their iDevices aren't near as lucky as you appear to have been.
Here's a little bonus. When they switched the iPad, I went home happily and tried to turn it on, but it never did. It didn't work at all so I went back to Apple Store and they switched it again, but this time it was working. How ironic.
