I got my Iphone 5c last April when I was able to upgrade and I don't even have 6 GB of storage on the phone. My friend Astra said her mom got more storage on her phone so she has about 16 GB. Can some one help me?

You cannot get additional storage on the iPhone except by deleting content on the device. The storage is fixed, and is only affected by the amount of content you load on the device. My guess about your friend is that the mother purchased more iCloud storage, which is used for backup and is not on the device, but in the cloud. The only other alternative for getting more storage on the phone is to sell that phone and purchase one with larger capacity.
It is impossible to purchase or add new storage hardware to any iPhone.
You can free up existing storage, however.
Check Settings > General > Storage & iCloud Usage > Manage Storage
