Compressor can't convert but FCP X can?

I was given a bunch of files from someone's DSLR to use in a project. "MP4" extension

FCP 7 can't read them.

Compressor 3.5.3 can't read them

Compressor 4.2.1 on a new Mac Pro can't read them.

. . . but FCP X can read them write them out as ProRes (my desired conversion)

Why can't Compressor 4.x does this? Obviously the code is somewhere on the computer.

Mac Pro (Late 2013), OS X Yosemite (10.10.2), Sony EX1 / FCP 7 on old Mac Pro

Afraid I can't add much to this. Went through my system and the various mp4s that I brought into Compressor opened without problems. But there are a lot of flavors of mp4 and I'm not saying mine was in any way a comprehensive test.

Final Cut and Compressor share a lot of the same code but there are clearly differences. For example, Compressor will open up a program stream, but FCP X will not; Final Cut won't open a file with an m2v extension while (even through it struggles mightily) .Compressor will. For whatever reason.
