What anti-virus or firewall products do you have installed? Norton in particular has been causing problems as of late, but others may hinder communication too. See also Corrupt iPod classic.

No i have been using Kaspersky antivirus and i have connected it the earlier day it was connected and charged too...
but all of a sudden it has stopped working. Does the battery got exhausted as it been since 10 years
The battery can fail yes. 10 years is a good innings. Were you able to look at the stats or is the display completely blank? Have you tried toggling the hold switch and rebooting it?
