view a contact's phone number without calling them?

Yet another Apple quirk - I've only been on an iPhone for several years, and so of course it takes a while to get used to the weird, illogical way in which some things are approached. But can anyone tell me how to view a contact's phone number without actually calling that contact. Specific recent case: I'm trying to type in the phone numbers for 3 employees into an airline website, so that their boarding passes can be sent directly to their phones. Unfortunately, one can't see the contacts entire phone number unless one calls that number. Seems weird to me - what if you run into a mutual friend and they ask for Jon's phone number - I can't just give it to the person, without calling the third person. Oh well - maybe it's something I'm doing wrong.
